Hey guys, I've just picked up a 1990 sierra. Only been driving it around for a day and by the sounds of it, the car has had petrol sitting in it for a long time whilst the car hasn't been used. I didn't drain the fuel I just topped it up at the local servo. Anyway tonight I went to take it for a spin around the block and it had trouble starting and when I did get it to start it would stall when I came to a stop (when the revs dropped). Is this a case of the car not liking the old fuel? Should I look at training the tank, replacing the fuel filters and the fuel lines? Cheers |

Just had the same issue, try checking the ignition coil, timing, spark plugs and leads, and valve clearances as a start. I tried all the fuel stuff and ended up finding my coil was arcing out in the centre pin causing it to run like a bag of.......well the exact same as yours. |

what i usually find with the sierra carbs is that the idle air bleed circuit gets blocked. its a venturi that bleeds air into the idle circuit and atomises the air fuel mixture for a smooth idle. if you are experienced enough to take of the top of the carby , theres a brass screw with 2 flats nearby the accelerator pump , unscrew it and its like a inch and a half long tube it has a cross drilled hole at the top , but right at the bottom is a minute hole that bleeds air to the idle fuel , this is what usually blocks up. |
