| Post subject: | Leaky sierra floater seals |
Hey all - anyone running floating rear setup experienced weeping from the axle seals?? I've just changed over my axles and using factory seals and both sides are leaking. Not drastically, but enough to drip on the rear tyres now and then. Seals are definitely the right size so I'm stumped. Any ideas? |

Normal, in my experience - they'll weep a little. Are your axles straight? I've seen some JML axles that weren't. I don't think they're perfect in the front either - there always seems to be some gear oil in my knuckles when I pull my car apart. I have gone down a size (ID obviously) in the rear to make them fit tighter and mine are fairly good now. |

Yeah it's weird, they never used to leak until we pulled the JML ones in and out a few times, then the left started leaking. Now both JML out and new PJ's axles in and both sides leaking. Do you know off the top of your head if the JML kit runs the seal protector inside the diff tube? I'm wondering if maybe those are shagged and that's the issue?? |

Could you fit a Speedi-Sleeve over the shaft to tighten up the seal fit? |

I found some brand of seals were terrible on my last set of chromos and leaked instantly. Maybe try a different brand seal. Honestly for all the floater rear issues, makes me question why go to the trouble unless running a 33" or larger tyre |

Thanks Mick re: Why - I twisted a set of rears and I was sick of rear drums. At one point I was going through shoes almost twice a year (granted I was doing a bit of mud driving at the time). This leak is the only real issue i've had. The previous axles self-destructing was a heat treating issue that every who bought JML kits had. Add to that the JML kits were like $600 shipped when he first made them, so it was pretty cheap all things considered =) |

In general, they leak. I suspect the axle tubes in zooks are too weak and flex a tiny bit. any flex in the axle tube will cause the axle shaft to move in the seal and it will leak. Im considering running oil bath wheel bearings and just sealing all of the hubs, flanges and adapters on with sealant and just moving on with my life. |

haha My rear diff is trussed, so shouldn't be flexing. Interesting idea on the hubs/bearings!! Let me know if you do it, and please please take pics of the process (and part numbers) and report back =) I hate oil drips. |
