My diff in my sierra has been a little noisy for a little while now, but this morning when i was driving it i noticed a bad clunking/banging noise every time i braked. It isn't there when I accelerate or back off, only when I brake, and now there is diff oil coming out on the LHS rear axle.

Any idea's on what it could be? I'm about to go strip it and investigate

Thats what I had in mine, and i reckon it's leaking from the wheel seal?

So that'd explain it only clunking under brakes?

yeah the axle drops down and the seal cant seal, then when you hit the brakes the shoes clunk and it centres the axle again

Just waiting on a slide hammer now so I can get the axle out. Would the diff problem of caused this do you think? (Not enough pre load on the pinion)

is the axle stuck in there?

I use a metre long chain for this, the two ends can be slid over the axle studs, put the two nuts on, then first yank on the chain and it usually comes out, or if it's really stuck get a pick handle, slide it through the chain loop and yank that.

or you could use a slide hammer if you have one

put the drum on backwards and put the nuts on a few turns, instant slide hammer

Tried that, it's fkn tight. Last time I had them out I had to use a slide hammer

just used the hook that came with the kit. came off easy.
