These benders any good, thinking of getting one to make up an exo and front and rear bars.

Any other suggestions?

There is a way to fix those benders to stop them creasing the pipe you need an oxy and a mig though mine works a treat now

Not really. They are for pipe. You want to use TUBE. Tube benders are considerably dearer, but they will nett a better result for the items you wish to make.

The problem with the pipe benders is die size and radius. The dies are almost always imperial, but we get alot of metric tube and pipe in australia. This means you get a poor fit between the pipe and die, and crushing/ kinking is the result. Also the rollers dint the pipe/ tube.

For the exo, you will want to use a 32NB medium black at the very least. The 1 3/4" (closest to 32NB? might be 1 1/2".....) die that comes with the bender will have a MASSIVE radius, that really doesn't suit the application.

If you are clever with your exo design, you can still get a good looking/ effective cage, but only after you solve the tube crushing/ kinking/ dinting poor fitting die problems.

My 2 cents.
Pete

for front and rear bars they are fine. an exo maybe but it might come out looking a bit ugly and won't have 100% strength. for the bars it is all to do with working with what you've got.

This is my front bar that i made using on of those benders:

And my sliders:

They have their faults but both the front bar and the sliders have taken a lot of abusing and neither are looking worse for wear, except for pain :P

there really isn't a not too expensive tube bender on the market. and the dies alone start to add up some dollars. I was lookin recently and I am going to make a bender to suit the dies of a US company. For a die to fit 1 size of tube (will not get proper bends with anything but the ONE designated size) you are looking at $250US + frieght. If you want aus, it is around $650-$800 for a die set (one size).

I get die sets for my speedworx bender for under $500 a set. Still dear, but it works every time.

As already said they are only good for light work and small bends. There is a Yellow and black one that lays on its side. it allows the dies to sit further apart and it bends a little better. I can't find it on the net but when you find it you will see what I mean. from memmory they are about $30 more then those.

Pipe is the same size around the world, there is no metric or imperial versions!!! its just either 32nb, 1.25" 1 1/4" 42.1mm od etc, depending on the wrong way people say it, you need to get good quality pipe not cheap Chinese shit, Australian tube mills make a nice product called oztube that bends well, likewise Orrcon make it here a well, try and ask for AS1163 or 350mpa pipe as its stronger and made for Structural applications so bends better

tube is different as its measured by its od, you can get the same grades though, its all useless if your dies are shit Chinese things though

That is the biggest problem.

When Shep did his canopy he had what we assumed to be shit chinese steel. It fit the dies quite well but just wrinkled and deformed.

I have used these types of bender before with decent tube and haven't had any problems

you will not get anywhere near a 90 degree bend with 2" no matter what steel you use. I have tried with both high and low quality steel and both got somewhere around ~70 degrees before they were kinked. not just distorted but kinked, proper fucked.

wow royce is cutting me down a lot lately, i'm going to stop using direct words :D ... What fence gate is made with 2" tube royce? that would be a heavy gate.. Most of the gates around here would be like 32nb tops. from the pictures in the links he provided i doubt that they are very good dies, more than likely the same sort of ones that I have. Where would you put the seam ball? on top of the bend, on the bottom or on the side? I'm pretty sure on the side allows it to kink easily, on the bottom it kinks up and into the top wall. I don't think i have tried on the top though

pipe is the shit you use for running water lines and stuff. a lot of people use it for fabrication because it is cheap. tube is stronger and designed for motorsports (i think). For roll cages you need to be using tube, pipe does not cut it. royce can give you a good run down, he has before in other threads ;)

tube is measured by its outside diameter and wall thickness in mm usually, pipe is in nominal bore and weight and all are set sizes anyway but you need to be smarter to remember them all

neither is cheaper than the other as its all based on the grade regardless, tube mills dont care what the OD is when they pump it out

if you want to get technical about grades both can be bought in AS1163 (the aus standard for structural formed sections in Australia) but usually pipe (CHS) is the size asked for over tube, exhausts on the other hand are usually made from tube , pipe can also have other grades attached to it depending on its type and end use, AS1074 for water pipe (usually medium wall CHS) API5lb for ERW (welded seam pipe) for high pressure gas and solid transmission, A106B for seamless pipes, up to Chrome Moly stuff for heat exchangers and stuff

tube is the in thing for rollcages and such as CAMS and CCDA list tube sizes in the specs, using pipe in a size suitable nets you with a larger OD and heavier wall than the bare min required, which will cost you weight, both can be bought in the correct grade needed and both can be ordered in the yield and ductability you need for the job

next lesson I might talk about real high strength carbon steel pipe used in gas wells that would make ace tube bars

One day I will tell you lot about the real big national Pipe supply company I work for

All I want is to build an exo and some barwork, eg sliders, front and rear bars

will one of these do the job?

assuming that i use say 32nb?? i think thats one everyone is using for exo's
