hey every one just wonder how stong zook diffs r? i run 31's and lockers front and rear and have not broken any thing yet, but i want to run 35's with 6.5 transfer gears and 5.38? diff gears and locker front and rear with cromo cv's and axels in the front, how long do u think this will last on rocks ect before it breaks crown wheel or some thing? or would i b safer going straight fo hilux diffs with 5.12 diff gears, thanks

you could build it up with HD front cvs and Trail tough now do HD CrMo rear replacemnt axles as well.

A lot of guys in the states run similar setups to you on rocks and they seem to go alright going off what they say on the forums. But if you have the skills to weld and fit hilux diffs you might find its a cheaper option if you are going to do the labour yourself.

If you like dumping the clutch and are really rough on your car then maybe hilux diffs are the way to go as the bigger ring and pinion will probably be worthwhile.

I know guys that run 35.5 Q78 swampers on Zook diffs with no real dramas with upgraded components here in vic. but it all comes down to how you drive!

i dont drive it to hard, i was just woried about having so much gearing behined the g16b all that touqe sent to zook diffs, i want to run 35/12.5/15 trepadors, on a -50 rim or close to it, the main resion i want to keep zook diffs is clearence under the centre,

Best thing you've done or will be doing is splitting up the gear reduction in both your diffs and your transfer. The distributes the load though the whole driveline which means your transfer isn't going to wind up too much and snap mounts.

if you wet 6.5s and 3.7 diffs on 35s you might find that you would break shit more often. your gearing is going to be pretty low with 5.38s and 6.5s. hope you don't like going fast on the road!

Is it just a comp rig or trail basher? I'm guessing you won't be driving on the road...

i dont plan on driving it on the road any more, bush only, want to start enter some comps once it is all done, so i shold be ok the set up i want? what would break first crown wheel? and where can u get rear cro moly axel in australia? i know locktup sell the front's and the gearing just have not come across rear axels

Im in the process of working out full floating axles in 4340 cromo for the rear, its not going to be cheap, but will be seriously strong

is there a way to make the adjusters stronger on the carryers? i just broke an other one driving to a mates place, the adjuster part finds it way losse bending the lock tub upand the centre flobs around making a great noise,

i wouldn't go above 31 - 33s on Sierra diffs, you can upgrade axles and cvs but the rest will bend too.

You only lose 10mm clearence with hilux diffs! Don't beleive all those intermegeek rumours about how you have to run 44s to get the same clearence as 31s :lol:

BUT, as said above, depends how you drive, and what you drive on. If you just drive mud then you could run 38s on sierra diffs :lol:

What comps are you going to do? Check the entry rules before you modify anything.

sounds lke hilux diffs r the go, r hilux and bundara the same width? or will hilux front and rear b fine for off road only use. r all the entry rules different or mostly the same, i only want to entry the easyer comps like tuff tracks ect

You better check with the Tough Track comp rules, but i think every mod has to be blue plated or legal, and so i don't think they would allow hilux diffs on a sierra, but check with them.

so yeah, best to check comp rules before doing anything. Don't ask here about their rules, ring them up and get real information.

What terrain do you plan to drive with 6.5's and 5.38:1 diffs? Thats a seriously low crawl ratio.

I run 6.5's and 4.1:1 with 33's locked front and rear in my ute. Broke my first pinion gear last week after a couple of years of abuse.
I've never had CV or axle issues - However I'm aware of how to not abuse a drivetrain.

In a comp scenario with timelimits and bonus lines to challenge you, I'd expect to frequently break components.
