Post subject:  aftermarket engine managment
so some friends and i are building up a sierra with a baleno g16b and now i have sorted out wiring diagrams thanks to pj zook i have also got the task of deciding apon engine managment

the reason for this is as its going to be a trailer queen we are going for wank factor and installing a sc 14 supercharger on the little i.6 so i will require either a stand alone computer or a piggy back.

so my questions are having in mind that it is to a budget.
-what should i use a piggyback or a standalone?
-what recomended brands.?
-what are the differences between the 2 systems ?
-what are the price points?
-has anyone on here done it

oh yeah we might also be installing a nos kit one of the boys can get cheap

- i would use a stand alone
- microtec
- stand alone is alot more tunable, piggy back is exactly what it says. use the original computer and piggy back off that, tunability is no where near as good as an aftermarket though.
- i paid a little over 1200 for the last microtec i bought and then fitted it myself.. plus tuning(which varies fom place to place)

if you are going nos then i would definately be running an aftermarket computer.
the first thing i would do is look at what local tuners use. you dont want to get something that you have to ship interstate/pay for someone to come to you to tune (and i know a few people who have had to do this, mainly with hondas and vtec setups)

I have heard of some really poor customer service/tech support from Microtech...

I would seriously look at other ECU's such as Haltech etc.

I have got an Autronic smc with autotune. Found it quite easy to setup and tune. Australian made too

It is kinda for sale. Was on my sierra previosly but is set up for a 4agze with turbo instead of the supercharger (injector impedience is the only real tuning diference between 4age and 4agze) Has all sensors + crank angle sensor runs stock injectors and coils...

Microtech seems pretty simple in how it works, I would think youd need something decent to work with teh coil on plugs and some form of sequential injection

haltech, great customer support, i bought a 10yr old s\h computer and they offer phone and e-mail tech support for that unit that i didn't even buy off them, haltech control idle control well which microtech is shit at, and haltech's have high resolution mapping, meaning smoother throttle response and driverbility that can be tuned closer to factory, and the big + for me is there half the price of motec or autronic.

My opinion on microtech is if you own a rotary there are great, there built to a budget with sacrifices

Never used it...yet, but heard plenty of good things about Megasquirt. I would only use Megasquirt if you are confident with electronics though.

EMS. Autronic, Haltech, Wolf are all good. But I'd give microtech a wide birth. Both product and service are inferior to others mentioned.

I'd run an microtech any day of the week - but I have a competent tuner who is recognised worldwide for being one of the best with this ecu.
Their ecu's are a proven performer for me. However most tuners fail to put the effort into decent cold start and idle setup - which is a letdown to the end user.

I currently run an adaptronic in my zook (g16b/gti), because of the good reputation the brand has forged with the swift gti crowd. End user tuneable to a degree, however nothing beats quality dyno time with an experienced tuner.

I've used most of the big brand standalone ecu's in the past and wouldn't hesitate to use them again in the future.

find yourself a competent local tuner who you can trust. Talk with them about your needs and take their recommendation. It's no use webwheeling ideas about ecu's because you'll get 100 different opinions where it's only 2 ppl's idea that matter. Yours and the tuner.
