yes and no the side gears in the hemisphere where the axles slide in are different so you have to swap em to swap em you have to pull the diff apart if you have a WT they wont swap in short not really easilly but can be made too |

if you get the lockright that reuses your old side gears (most of the ones in aus are like that) then you can do your rear lockright now then later fit a rear airlocker to the front and drop the whole thing into the rear, then change side gears on your lockright to the front ones and stick it in the front can only do that on NT 1.3 cause the WT front side gears dont fit lockrights |

is a lockrite a good option??? a mate of mine with a gq has a lockrite in the front and he is always putting it in and out of 4wd just to turn corners |

Is a lockrite a good option for the rear for now anyway? Or is there another type that is better (except for the air locker $$$)? Money is the factor here... |

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cos i was thinkin of getting a lock rite for the rear, and then putting it in the front later, when i get a rear air locker... I also am thinking of doing the exact same thing. I already have the rear lockright in, Oh and it works fantastic, a little hard to get used to driving on the tarmac but the performance you gain off road far out ways the fiddley on road U turns.. I have heard so many different opinions on weather to put the air locker in the front or the back? I think there are advantages and dis-advantages on both accounts. This might drag out but worth a read. This is what I've discovered in my travels on this subject. This is not to be taken as gospel just my opinions. Option 1. Rear Airlocker / Front Lockright (Auto Locker) Gives you the ability to have a complete open diff for on road use no chirping and ticking while cornering no backlash on U turns seemingly no disadvantage on the road. Only in 4WD the front Autolocker will be engaged therefore again no on road performance issues. Steering the vehicle off road might be a slight bit more difficult but nowhere near as bad as a CIG locker or (Engaged Air locker) Due to the way the Auto locker works it can free wheel one side while turning so you should be able to steer as normal. If you have the rear AirLocker engaged it will make the vehicle want to go straight ahead making turning more difficult. Option 2. Rear Autolocker / Front Airlocker On road the rear Autolocker can be a little tricky when making sharp turns or U turns. Due to the play in the locking rears you get a slight bit of backlash if not accelerating through a corner. You also will hear tick tick tick as you turn but this is normal of a Autolocker. Over all A bit tricky on road but you get used to it after a week or so. Off road the rear Autolocker is fantastic it will deliver drive to both wheels no matter if one is in the air or stuck in a mud hole. Turning is also unaffected as one wheel free wheels therefore the vehicle will steer as normal. With the Airlocker in the front you can switch it on at will to climb up them ledges or big hills ect. But lookout if you want to make any turns whilst it is on cause this will be very difficult. Option 3. Front & Rear Autolocked. The best of both Options 1&2 with only slight disadvantage is onroad U turns or sharp cornering. But as I said before you get used to it. Also the cheapest option as on a Suzuki you can have this option for under a grand if you do the install yourself. Its not hard! Option 4. Front & Rear Airlockers. Ok passably the best option if you have the flash $$$ around the 3k mark you can switch them on and off at will and they make that nice pshhhht noise to.. You will still have hard steering when they are on! |

Think I may just go with the locker in the rear for now... Just not sure which one. When you say backlash, what do you mean? Keep in mind I am new to lockers... |

Ok because of the way a Autolocker works by sliping the sidegears there is about 18deg of play in the side gears before they take up. So if you turned your tailshaft by hand (with the vehicles wheels off the ground) you would turn it 18deg before the wheels actually move. On the road this can be felt when accelerating and decelerating by a slight jerk in the drive train. Known as backlash.. I love my rear locker it was super cheap (no punt intended) and makes a huge difference off road. No more taking diagonal lines to get over unjulating ground. I only paid $400 for mine and I put it in with 1 extra set of hands in one afternoon. Below is a exploded view of a LockRight locker.. In the Vitara kit I got you only get the Driver Gears, Stop Pins, Bias Springs & the 2 Spacers. The sidegears are used from the original diff and also the pinion shafts.
