just wondering how much better diff clearance a WT sierra has over other 4x4's. i have seen something mentioned before but can't find it.

it all depends on tyre size.

Post subject:  Re: sierra vs other 4x4's diff clearance

not much really. I'm sure lots will disagree but i think it's all outergimicks4x4 rumours

for example a hilux diff has 10mm less clearance than a sierra diff, but ofcourse you'd put bigger tyres on a hilux so you can forget the 10mm

so then you might argue that the sierra diff is offcenter, ... so it mght only depend on each individual track as to how each diff clears obstacles.

Post subject:  Re: sierra vs other 4x4's diff clearance

ihave heard it said that a sierra with 33" tyres has as much clearance as a hilux with 36" tyres.

have u measured? where is this info from?
Not disagreeing with you but i would have thought it would be a little more than that. Just after clarification

i'm glad you asked actually because too many people accept wild rumours like the classic "a sierra has better diff clearence than a monster truck " crap

I measured it in my driveway because i was constantly reading crazy rumours so i thought i'd check, i have a stockish sierra and a sierra with hilux diffs.

Funny how you might challenge my stats but wouldn't challenge the above claims about the 33s vs 36s? not taking offense but people will just accept rumours and run with in. (PS. oops that sounds nasty, wasn't meant to be)

all this tyre size and diff clearnace between 4x4 is all BS in my opinion, if there is any differance it would be soo minor you wouldnt even worry. When i get my 35's for the patrol i measure the differance to my zook on 30's just for interests sake :D

and just some more useless info, these hilux diffs with wheels pictured are narrower than a widetrack sierra with a little offset.

my seirra on 32's had 5mm more diff center clearnace than my mates patrol running 36 simex et.
this was at road pressures so i dont know about aired down.

the main advantage Ive found prticularly on nt is you cant fit in others ruts

i'm not challenging your claim just after finding some 'real' info. If have seen several claims like the 33's to hilux 36's. I'm am a little suprised it's so little but this is exactly what i was after, some who can compare diff's and i was particularly interested in the difference to hilux diffs. Thank you for clarifying where your measurements came from and for the info.

i just went and measured some vehicles for something to do

from the center of the axle to the bottom of the pumkin, rear diffs only.

sierra: 11cm
hilux: 12.5cm
75 series cruiser: 14cm
GQ patrol: 14cm

approximate only coz i had a jim beam can in one hand

patrol diffs are huge so not hard to believe.
getting off topic but is your new project gunna keep the nt diffs?

I thought about it for a while, but it means no co moly axles and it also means it will need to be super low to keep that upright feeling
Also I have some pretty airlocked and braced wt diffs in the high top that will probably end up in there.
I may run it just as it is for a few months with a 1.6i auto, I used to love that nt all locked up won't fit in the ruts feeling.

Post subject:  Re: sierra vs other 4x4's diff clearance

that's what i was wondering, stock nt's with 35's? sounded a bit optomistic.
What's happening with your hi-top?

Post subject:  Re: sierra vs other 4x4's diff clearance

it may end up a funky ruf on 31's or 32 with lockrites and ps and 1.6 efi
something to just jump in and drive when ever I fell like it.
its not the sort of thing you'd drive 50km's out to go wheeling as it is now I nearly always put it on a tandem. the soft top will end up similar specs to the high top now but about 2-3 inches lower and 35 or 36's (hopefully  )

sounds like it'll be a weapon. I'm planning a 2-3" lift and 33-34" tyres. But i need a sierra first  maybe this week :D

If you want to get serious about this, I think you should also start finding out how much each different diff type can be shaved. Then figure out the best diff clearence/tyre size combo after shaving. Just a thought anyway :)

I disagree. The difference between LJ/1L diffs and Sierra 1.3 diffs with the same size tyre has become very apparant to me, very quickly from having wheeled my LJ an entire 2 times. The extra diff clearance (possibly exagerated by the narrower track) allowed me to drive one or two places that I usually heavily plowed with the big 1.3 diffs. I think the actual measured difference clearance wise was like 15mm or something.

on gorilla snot hill when it's rutted, my vitara will get further than almost anything as it has no front diff to hit & such a small rear pumkin compared to a 60 series on 33's, hilux on 33's or a pootrol on 31's

Mine measured has exactly 10inch clearence between ground and diff pumpkin on 30" BFG KM2. GU patrol on new 285/75/16 BFG KM2's (roughly 33") has 9 inch clearence.

cheers for all the info. I like the idea of shaving the diffs. Has this been done before on zuk diffs and how much could you take off?

If your running realsize 31's + You should need to shave as it will be same or more clearance as others.

I will be shaving my bundera's when they go into my swb sierra as they are bigger..My sierra diffs atm hardly scrape.

sorry to hijack, whats the size of the vitara rear pumpkin?
i would imagine it would be very slightly bigger but im just taking a stab in the dark.

i asked a similar question on outers many moons ago and got sent a page which compared each different major tyre size - to diff clearances. between a patrol and a 90' vitara. and it listed all the different measurement about the tyre and measurement advantages of having a bigger tyre.
sadly my comp crashed and lost it:( i will try find the thread and get the page to show u lot.

I measured my early 75 series, which has the same diffs as a 60 and the troopy on 33s had the same diff clearance as my NT with WT diffs and 31s so real diff height difference between a hj75 and a wt sierra is 25mm.

Post subject:  Re: sierra vs other 4x4's diff clearance

my SIerra/LJ diffs have well over 300mm of diff clearance after shaving

a 1.3 pumpkin can be shaved more than 20mm
