Heard of the G16A carby being used on the g13ba but can't find much on it.

Before i go and buy a G16A carby, I want to make sure it will work, I won't need any extras and worth doing (no i don't want to do a engine swap);

1. Do I just need the carby? Or do I need the whole intake manifold as well?
2. Do I need any adapters to make it fit?
3. Will the 1.3 air box connecter do-flicky bit that directs the air into carb fit the 1.6 one ?
4. What are the main benefits? more reliable? smoother running?
5. Anything else I need to know?

fropm what i gather i think its just a straight up bolt on thing so as question 1 no just carby will do. 2 is no 3 is yes it shoukd i do believe but dont hold me to it you just use the 1.3 carby hat ontop of the 1.6. 4. i think it gives a tiny bit more power about it as its a bit bigger as it powers a 1.6 instead of 1.3. 4 is more power im guessing. 5 happy days. this is from what i think is what the answers would be and what would happen.

Had a go at this same thing last weekend. Joe is the man when it come to this but its not that hard really

Using the vitara inlet manifold makes it so much easier to do but is not necessary. From memory, the 1.3 manifold has an extra coolant output that has nowhere to go on the vit carby. I presume that you can just block this off but i had the vit manifold so i didnt need too.

You dont need any adapters to fit it, however you will need to modify a 4 wire plug from the vit carby to mate with the 3 wire sierra plug. Also you will need to adapt the sierra carby hat/airbox to fit the vit carby for ease of install. A 10mm high metal ring (like an egg ring) needs to be fitted between the carby and hat if you want to use the sierra one.

As for the air box flicky bit?? If this is the valve that directs hot air into the carby when cold and flicks over to cooler air when warm, i scrapped that ages ago but if you were to adapt the 1.3 carby hat to suit, i dont see why it wouldnt still work.

I had it on for the weekend and it felt to have a bit more low down power, allowing me to short shift a bit more. As for top end, i didnt feel that much but i don't know if i had i plumbed up properly and also they are well known for running rich so getting it tuned may improve this even more.

I had good fun learning most of this for myself so i hope it helps. Anyone with more knowledge on the matter feel free to correct me if i'm wrong

Thanks Shaunoszuk, Yeh the air box do flicky I meant the hat.

If I buy the carby thats up for grabs it has the manifold with it, so might swap it then.

change of carby might give you a bit better low end power, but bugger all up top. Some people will argue that Vitara carbs are better than Sierra carbs, but with 20 years and 160000km's on my Sierra, I've overhauled it once, and it starts first click of the key every time and runs like a dream. Personally, I'm not a fan of the Mikuni carbs and their plastic fuel bowls (similar to early Magna's). Question you gotta ask yourself is, is it worth the frigging around to install a Vitara carb for the benefits it may or may not provide

not only myself, but many of my customers who have pulled thier hair out with crappy sierra aisin carbs would argue the vit ones are better. mikuni are really good at one thing....building carbs. over the years i have never had a person who was unhappy with thier vit carbs, and in fact i usually get a call an hour or so later telling me what a difference it has made in all areas including up top (and then you can add some more trickery to the carb for even better up-top).

Interesting, most interesting. Worst I can do is give it a go and learn I guess.

What additional trickery do you speak of Joe?

Got any other tips for them? What do you think about swapping the manifold as well?

sent it to me and you will find out

you can use the vit manifold, but you don't have to. get as late model carb as you can find and when tuned get it gas anylised.

you also have to watch with the different manifolds that they fit around the fuel pump as i went to put one manifold onto my new engine and it didnt fit around the fuel pump but gave it a bit of a shave with the grinder and she fitted on perfect.

one wire from the fuel cutt-off goes to the wire with ignition. the other on the fuel cut-off is earth. the wire for the bolt vent (three screws triangular pattern on the fron side of the carby) also gets hooked to the ignition wire. thats it.

Reviving an old thread here as it didn't answer 1 question:

My G13BA is currently fitted with a standard SJ413 Fuel pump, ie fuel inlet on one tower and the other tower has the return and fuel out to carby. The G16A Mikuni Carb has two fuel lines in to the carby. What is the solution to that?

I tried fitting the G16A fuel pump to the G13BA block and it didn't appear to fit ( I didnt get violent to truly test that). Can you just split the fuel out line from the pump to support both lines into the Mikuni Carb? or must it be solved a different way?

cheers
