Spoke to local mod plater mob and they said that it was unnecessary to get one for the Sierra, have had the 1.6 carb engine put into it. (Was 1.3l)

Does this ring true to you anyone else?

They said it was still 4 cyl and only 300cc larger so it wasnt necessary.!!??

everyone had there opinion on this subject..

I have been told that you don't because you are still runing the same engine as such (g series) amd only ne ed to notify qls, transport of the change if engine number.
I have also ben told that you do need to get one as they are a different engine..

even when you call qld transport they don't even know.

Yep I've read through the Dep of Trans stuff before.. Its a clear as mud.

The sierra did come out with a 1.6l in i think it was Canada, or maybe USA..

My main concern was with insurance.

ANyway when are they going to review the tyre OD rules for QLD. I'm running 215/75R15 - ie small tyres, but they are still just over what dept of trans say are legal.

Dept of Trans wouldnt know if its arse was on fire I suspect.

I bought my car with a 1.6l in it. it was registered with it ngine no. and everything was legitement, apprantly suzisport did it but i cant confrim this. When i asked the same question i was told the same thing 'that it wasn't required' as it was on the rego and had already been through the system. I even went into the transport system and they told me when the engine was swaped over in the computer.I found this exceptionally wird and confusing, being on my p's at the time i figured screw it im getting a mod plate anyway. If its a different engine i think its better to be on the safe side and get it done.

Well they should've stuck a 1.6 carb or EFI in the Sierra to start with!! You're a menace on the roads these days with anything less.

I was quoted $160.00 for the mod plate originally.. Might be worth doing just for piece of mind? WIll have a chat to the insurance company first.

Cheers

Actually Royce you don't need a mod plate to remove the rear seats unless you make it permanent.

TEMPORARY REMOVAL OF SEATS:

Modifications to vehicles are regulated in Queensland to ensure those vehicles remain in a safe condition. The Transport Operations (Road Use Management - Vehicle Standards and Safety) Regulation 1999 requires modifications to be approved. Seating capacity changes are approved though the Approved Person scheme.

The main principal that needs to be addressed in scenarios that have arisen in relation to the removal of seats is whether the vehicle is actually modified or has just been reconfigured in accordance with the manufacturers various options. If seats are reconfigured, no modification occurs and approval is not required. The other factor is the length of time the seats will be removed.

Queensland Transport's policy in relation to this matter is as follows:

For vehicles fitted with quick release seating attachments as original equipment, temporary removal of the seats is acceptable. A Modification Plate does not need to be fitted. This is commonly the case for four wheel drives and people movers.

For vehicles fitted with bolt in seating structures, no approval by an Approved Person is necessary for the temporary removal of seats, provided the category of the vehicle does not change as a result of the seating reduction.

Vehicles with the permanent removal of seating structures must be approved by an Approved Person and a Modification Plate must be fitted for the reduction in seating capacity. In this circumstance, any change in vehicle category must also be taken into consideration prior to the
fitting of the Modification Plate. The vehicle operator's insurance company and Queensland Transport should be advised of relative changes to the vehicle.

NOTE: For the purposes of this policy, "permanent" means the seats are removed for an
indefinite period or not expected to be refitted.

Queensland Transport will mutually recognise interstate drivers traveling in Queensland who comply with their own jurisdiction's requirements. These drivers are advised to carry some proof of this compliance.

At the time of a Safety Certificate inspection, the vehicle must be returned to the manufacturer's original condition or have a Modification Plate fitted for the seating configuration as presented.

The vehicle modifier/operator is responsible for ensuring that the safety of the vehicle is maintained and that all seats, when being re-installed, are re-installed in accordance with relevant standards and recognised automotive practice.

Please note that modifying a vehicle that adversely affects its safety, or driving or parking an unsafe vehicle on a road are breaches of the Transport Operations (Road Use Management - Vehicle Standards and Safety) Regulation 1999.

X2 here. I bought my sierra with a 1.6 EFI already installed, registered with that engine number and not plated.

I however got it plated, and unknowingly made it illegal for me to drive my car :( as it's illegal for p players to drive mod paired vehicles.

In nsw.. My dad put a 1500cc in a 1300cc ke55 corolla. Legit. No modplates or anything.

If the motor is bolt in, same external sizing, no mods and within a 200cc its all good. Rta nsw guidelines.

Check with QLD transport.

Actually, it's within a 15% increase in capacity, with specifically listed exemptions. But from 1298/1324cc to 1590cc exceeds this, so an Eng Cert is req'd.

One of the bits of good news, replacing a 797cc F8A with a 970cc F10A is one of the specifically mentioned approvals! :D

I'd rather send the SJ's....friggen piles of crap

Being currently employed by QLD government, I can understand why our vehicle laws are so stuffed up... its hard to explain, but I think it has something to do with the constant state of chaos the government works in 8O
