Hey all - anyone know how to tell the difference between a 1.3 and a 1.6 starter motor? Mines shat it and i dont know which is the right replacement?

Is it hard up against the block?
Take it out, if it's been ground down, then it's definitely a 1.3.

Im at sea so cant help, I have both, sorry.

Just by the pics, im not sure, but it looks diff to the 1.3 I pulled and replaced not long ago, but then, pics are pretty hard to id on.

Or a non reduction 1.6, either way it's the big bodied starter..

Looks like a 1.3 to me. Alien could you take a pic of yours when you take it out.

I need a pic of a ground down 1.3 to fit a 1.6.

i'll see what i can do... im getting suzistore to fit my new one - i can't imagine the hassle of grinding it down and test fitting over and over. they have reduction ones on order and none in stock =(

brian has small ones that fit both 1.3 and 1.6 they sound a bit different when cranking tho

he's out of stock on the smaller reduction style ones =( hoping they will come in tuesday in time for me to get one put in, as i like the idea of one that bolts in rather than one thats been ground like all hell to make fit =P

thanks man, but i'll just get sean to grind me a fresh one if they don't have the reduction one in time.... joys of a daily driver is it needs to start every morning, lunch and arvo on demand =) haha

this roll starting off the starter motor is super-gay, and bad for my ring gear if i hold the key too long =P

Have you had a look inside of it yet? mates 80 series just had mud stuck inside it and was arcing out. The thing had like 2 - 3 breathers on it.

not yet - but will do... i also have a spare solenoid thanks to crewsy, so will most likely replace that anyway, as it gets moisture in it in winter.

has anyone found a way to reliably seal them up?

How to grind a 1.3 starter to fit 1.6:

Step 1: Grind


Step 2: Grind some more


Step 3: Better grind it one more time


Step 4: Admire grinding skills


Step 5: Smooth it out a bit


Step 6: Rust protection


To fit:
Disconnect battery, Remove airbox, remove original starter, put new starter in, re-fit airbox, re-connect battery...

Thats what I thought you would have to do. Grind right along the body of it.

Any chance this goin into "Good Tech" simple but pics paint a thousand words.

You dont have to always grind along the whole starter. Sometimes you only need gring it a little, bolt it up and see if you can slide a piece of paper behind it without it getting caught.
In Aliens case having all the injection gear in the way it was easier to do the whole lot and be sure that the starter does not foul the block.

As a reference G16A blocks are not as bolky near the starter (but they crack blocks more comonly) G16B blocks require more grinding as suzuki added a little more alloy and webbing to the block to try rectify some of ther issues of cracking blocks

Did you have any trouble with the teeth not lining up? I'm about to do this and my mate tryed twice but then he started it and just shredded the fly wheel. This happened twice with the fat Sierra starter and then he got a long body one and had no trouble (Carby job) any tip when fitting it?
