Just wandering, what are bar treads like off road? I assume they'd be half decent in mud with a bottom but I can't see them being too brilliant for anything else.

Trying to decide wether to buy some bar treads or forget about it and save for a second hand set of mudders for the LJ, it'l basically only be driven off road so yeah.

Thanks

Bar treads are great on the beach. I thought they wouldn't be any good due to how skinny they are, but the LJ's are so light.

I saw some bloke with an LJ awhile back, i think the tyres were 'power king' or something like that. Tall and skinny with a decent mud tread on them with abit of a side wall.

I have big horns and bar treads for my LJ.

Both equally good on the beach. Big horns better off road, but bar treads better on road.

Get mud terrains unless its your daily.

I ran the MRF 6.00x16 bar treads off my LJ on the Sierra for a short while, the Bighorns it has on it now are miles ahead in on-road preformance.

I plan to daily drive my lj with the bartreads but is this a silly idea as I like the standard look of an lj with bartreads

Steering is heavier on road with the big horns. Plus they hang outside the guards about 50mm. I leave my big horns on all the time, but I only drive it when going off road. Wouldn't want to risk passing cops every day with them

In the olden days we drove everywhere on bar treads mainly because we didn't have much to choose from back then we didn't know any better. Personally i still love that nostalgic millitary look but I have other sets of tyres as well for different applications. Remembering that an LJ is light and slow thay actually feel pretty much at home on them, most people with negative comments have never really had them of have had ones that have been sitting around for 25 years and are hard, deformed and past their prime. dez82 bought new ones which is why his ran along the bitumen so well, hardly any rolling resistance, well ballanced and still nice and soft.

You know, I always imagined ber treads would be half decent on road but now that I think about it, yeah, they'd be shit!

I think I'l get some mudders, all I need is 2 good bar treads and one rim though! Nothing beats the look of bar treads on an LJ. 8)

Thanks

Bump! :D

I keep reading (on landy/jeep sites and in old books) that bar treads are freaking horrible on sand yet people and the internet (like dez82 says above) keep on telling me that "nothing goes up a dune quite like a 2 stroke Suzuki on bar treads."

So are they really good on sand? Around here there's swampy mud and endless dunes and that's about it, if they really are good on sand I think I'l get them. Are 6 plys just as good as the original 4 plys?

I only need 2 and an LJ rim and I have a legal set of tires too. :D

Landys and jeeps are quite a bit heavier than zooks... Never had anything to do with bar treads but I'd imagine that this would have a hell of alot to do with it?

its all about the weight (better still- the lack of it) in the LJ, and the bar treads being 4 ply which makes the LJ so good off road, most of the time you dont even need 4wd they are so good.

Jeeps, landies, tojo's, pootrucks are so much heavier that they have to rely on good rubber and 4wd and a hefty application of brainpower (usually missing) to keep their drivers from sinking- and even then LJ's will take you places these overweight busses will struggle- I have taken ours places that goats would think twice about, and you would have trouble seeing my tracks when I got to the top- while the tojo's left bloody great footprints everywhere.

what you need to remember is that LJ's were never intended to be cruising down the highway at 110, take your time and enjoy the scenery!Your LJ doesnt really care too much about its rubber- it is more about its driver!
feel the awesomeness and be at one with the rig-a ding-ding 8)

i oftin dream of building a LJ, well restoring, 2 stroke with a big dirt bike exhaust , bar treads, no roof etc.. i think bar treads suit a LJ to the ground.. and honestly if you have a lj who cars its still going to out drive 90% of things in the bush!

Bar treads are great all round, just not so good on side angles with mud or wet roads. 4ply bars are hard to get now. I can only find 6 and 8 ply which are not LJ friendly.

Im also been looking at Tyres for my LJ , The only availible 600x16's are 6-8ply and above and $$$. the 2nd hand ones hard as fark .

Ive decided to use 205/80/R16 Federal Coragia MT. just about exactly the same size as 6.00x16 and should be soft enough for the LJ.

Pretty much all the tire shops here sell bar treads and tires for split rims.
And there's not a single place you can get a proper wheel alignment.
It's a freak show I tell you!

Lots if of zuks though, including diesel ones.

The WW2 Jeep (MB/GPW) was only 1100Kg, and the only Land Rover to come out with 6.00-16 bar treads was the Series One which was 1180Kg - Neither terribly much heavier than a Suzuki, and If you could replace their heavy Cast Iron engines with an alloy block, they'd be closer still.

I ran my Jeep with 7.50-16 Barneys and it was scary on wet roads. I had to put it in H4 in downpours to keep some degree of control. Wind-up was never an issue as the tyres would find a way to break traction and release it.

LJ rims are Tube-type, and the tyres themselves are also Tubed. Even if you use Tubeless tyres, you will still require an innertube.

Brands available in Aust include Deestone and MRF (both avail in 4 or 6 ply), and Universal Tire will import Firestones or their own STA brand.

Thanks guys. :D

The thing with the jeeps and Landies (as 303zuke says) is they're only 30-50% heavier (often running bigger tyres though), if it's a crap sand tyre on those then you'd think it'd still be a crap tyre on a zook, just slightly less crap? Seems they're a great tyre though.

I looked into doing that but I pretty quickly figured if I don't have bar treads I'l have big muddies. I'l get muddies for it eventually though. :D

Just out of curiosity, how much do they cost over there? (I have a feeling this is going to hurt  ).

I'm only 17 so that could be a little difficult for me. I'm sure we could sort something out though. I'l let you know when I'm going to Perth next.

Antique Tyres has them, not cheap though. :?

303zuke, do you know of any suppliers of those tyres? Should I (within reason) be able to walk into a tyre shop and get them to order those in for me?

FYI the tyres on my LJ are Cheng Shin brand, they look quite new, they are 6 ply.

I have one of the original Bridgestone tyres, it's brilliantly cracked and very hard, it's got so little pressure in it that my gauge couldn't get a reading and it looks like it's got 40PSI!

How much tread depth (down to the tyre wear indicators) should a new bartread have? Just trying to figure out how worn mine are, got probably 5-6mm left to the TWIs.

Thanks

Everything (imported) is between 50 and 100% higher in cost here.
A very rusted out sierra will set you back around 3-4K, unless its diesel, then its 5-6.

Funny thing is nobody cares about the year or the Ks on it, only how much its falling apart governs how much its worth, I've seen a NT in good condition advertised for 6K and a Coily for 3. My heep that would be probably 4-5K in AU was >10K here.

Good news though, I have confirmed I'm getting a Jimny in November for 8K.

As far as cost from the bar treads go, no idea. I can ask probably on monday, but your probably better importing them from china yourself, as thats where they come from, Dank might be able to help you with this as he is doing a lot of small imports from there.

You can certainly try your local tyre place and ask them if they can get in Deestone or MRF tyres. The Aust agent for MRF is Ag Tyres in Moree, NSW, and there is at least one bloke in WA selling Deestones.

Antique Tyres in Melb are simply an agent for Coker Tire in the States. Like the Locktup/Low Range Offroad relationship, they will have some items in stock but just place an order, wait a couple of weeks and add their margin. Coker produce the "Firestone" bar treads, while Universal Tire make the Specialty Tires of America (STA) line. Each sells the others tyres, so that's why their prices swap about. They state the tread depth to be 1/2" (12.7mm).

Will bar treads be ok on a trailer doing long on and off road trips? i want to run them as they are fairly tall and skinny but most of all they look 8)

A couple of things to consider:

-The track will be narrower than the already narrow trailer track.
-Bar tread are quite tall (just shy of 32") so your trailer might sit higher.

and yes they are tubeless. :)

Tubes ad Tyres import Deestones into Sydney. ~ $120 each. They are wholesalers only, so get your local tyre place to call them for a price. BTW they don't have any stock for 8+ weeks. :)

The axle is being made to size to suit the LJ rims
Are you sure they are 32" :? the new bar tread i seen on Hooki's LJ80 was more like a 30"

Image

Can someone confirm what size a 600x16 is in inches for me? if they are to big ill just get some 205R16's

Hang on a 7.50R16 is a 32" :? so a 6.00x16 would have to be smaller
