especially seeing its just a few magnets spinning, there may even be something out there that would work straight up, I think older Cressidas had a vss that screws on in place of a speedo cable

I know I keep harping on about the rally trip meter thingo but I have been waiting years for somebody to come along that has the mad skills to make such a thing, heres some examples of stuff out there (dont worry about the fancy stuff jsut the adjustable distance meter bits is all that matters :) )

I could be talking out of my arse here and please tell me if i am doing so but as for tyre circumference would it be greater at highway speeds due to centrifugal force? Kind of like when you see a drag car's tyres get taller when they take off/do burnouts. Of course not to that extent. Therefore you'd be better off taking your tyre circumference from the the higher air pressure measurement. It might not make much of a difference but just an idea. Probably only worth considering if you do alot of highway miles too. Cheers!

Good thinking bron5on, I have already addressed the issue as above and have tested it against the GPS for that exact reason. There is very minimal change in actual speed due to centrifugal force at 100KPH. Note: Drag car tires are alot different to ours ie run at really low pressures and spun at really high speeds.

royce: That cressida pick up could be worth looking into. Would eliminate the speedo cable which is usually kinked some where and gives the wobbly speedo needle. Defiantly would help my averaging code that im using to counteract for the kinked cable!

A non adjustable odometer can also be included into this.

I thought it might be a fairly neglible difference but figured i'd ask the question all the same. And i got to use words like centrifugal and make it sound like i knew something! :lol: Nice work by the way, pretty clever little solution to pretty common problem on modded zuks. I like it!

i am liking this thing alot..

i will take one if you make them to go next to the clock... where the flap should be.. and throw in some other features.. ie battery voltage

because its fun to build stuff to suit yourself I guess, this section is about making things not sooking there is something available already, otherwise people would post up all the other things that do the same already

fwiw the vapour is too hard to hook up to a late model car, this setup can be adapted to suit

Of course it is more fun!

My car is an 84 NT though and would be piss easy to install one of these into (and have been thinking about it as my tacho isnt working well and the speedo is *sarcasically* 100% accurate.

Dont get me wrong, I love building stuff and its a cool project but personally I wouldnt in this case. Especially if I needed one soon as on electronics projects I tend to procrastinate.

Yea unfortunatly not much to report on this side as of yet. Uni hit me with a fat ass steam roller so im just trying to get out of that hole before its back onto the projects.

So a few questions on this gadget. How do you calibrate it? What sensors do you need and how accurate is it in terms of speed/distance?

MY understanding of the vapor is it uses a magnet on the wheel with a pickup much like a push bike speedo and the other functions use their own sensors

so you would be looking at wheel mounting (hard) or driveshaft mounting and adjusting the calibration to suit, I do believe they have dual bike modes so you may be able to do 2 tyres through that?

FWIW I was all set on getting this for its trip computer functions till you come along Dan :)

keep me updated I will probably be interested in getting one of these if they can be engineered (ie they are ADR compliant) if I decide to engineer my car on 31" tyres. I figure it will be a far better long term solution than coughing up for a non-adjustable mechanical adjustment to get my speedo correct.

^^ i got my speedo calibrated (by adding more length to the speedo spring) by a professional place for only $80... that included pulling the cluster out, soldering on a new bit of spring, then checking with GPS as well as known markers on the road etc... all up it ended up around 4 hours work lol but he stuck to his quote of $80 =) it also cost the same, from the same place, to get my tacho working with the 1.6L Vit EFI engine...

One major issue is that I couldn't get the trip meter and odometer data to store during power down which was a plain bummer. Although just recently I have found an alternative microprocessor that will have non-volatile on board memory so I have a few of them on order.

The other issue was with the sierra speedo cable and VSS pickup and trying to get a nice clean even signal out due to the slight wobble and jerky drive of the cable system. I have a better averaging code to try out which should smoothen things out.

A better pickup system would be nice, hence my interest in zuknutter's sierra tcase swap into the jim, retaining the electronic speedo pickup.

Funny you say that! I was actually working on some code to give real time fuel consumption for the EFI crowd based on injector size and measuring the pulsewidth :wink:

The don't zuk fan but I found a very simple way to include one in the cluster. This alone will be able to feed signals to the speedo, thus non-efi kids wont miss out.

Doubt it's relevant to your project, but it may be a simple solution for others.
I use an acewell digital speedo in my zook. Uses a magnetic bolt fitted to my rear axle (or several if greater accuracy/faster response is needed).
Cost is ~$200 off ebay. Model #2853 from memory.
Gauge is a 52mm round unit that fits neatly in the unused vent hole in the centre of my maruti dash (or NT sierra).

You specify a rolling diameter in MM for your tyres and it calculates speed/distance based on that. Changing tyre sizes in the setup settings only takes a couple of button presses.
Display includes:
- Digital speed.
- Analogue tacho.
- Digital tacho.
- Trip A/B/Total Odom.
- Fuel level.
- Warning lights. hazard/indicator/check engine/high beam/oil.

If you dont have one already you can get a speed pulse from the ecu via the speedo itself, Yellow with black wire from memory

Got the new microprocessors so now got to come up with another prototype board for testing.

Hopefully have the proto up an running in the next few weeks and ready for testing.
