Hi all, my son has a Sj70 with a 5 speed box. This week had problems of not beening able to select 5th gear. Yesterday we went out and now can't also select reverse gear. All others are good.

Any ideas on why just these two?

Thanks

There is a common problem i believe about 5th gear shitting itself on sierras.

Is it grinding trying to go in to 5th or just not at all?

Remove the shifter and you'll see two shift rails.
On the left as you look down into the box, there is a steel hinged flap thing to stop you accidently selecting reverse.
My bet is the flap is broken or the spring on it is broken.

Moves from neutral to 1,2,3,4th all OK, but will not move to the right at all.

Just removed the shifter and checked the two pin looking things. The one on the right moved in and out cleanly. The one on the left not as well. Took the jump and removed the case. Cleaned both pins and put all back in and now works great in reverse and 5th.

Many thanks.

Two last questions of the day if I may. What sort of grease should be used in putting the pins back as as I have just used as a test some bearing grease.

2nd q, just in front of the gear sick housing there is something sicking out of the top of the box. Is this the gearbox breather?

Thanks

Nafty

Thanks
