Going to chuck an in-line fuel filter on the Vit tomorrow, but not sure how to tell what hose to cut. There's a fair few going off the carby and I've checked the service manual and cant find any references or diagrams for a carby.

Can anyone help me out in identifying it?

Cheers

Between carby nd fuel pump I guess
Should be only one fuel hose going to the carby

The fuel line in, is at the very front top of the carb with a brass nipple.

Install your filter between this point and the steel tubing bolted to the engine that way you can zip tie the filter just above the thermostat housing and keep an eye on the shit going through it.

Cheers guys. I'm going to have a look at it in the morning. Trying to isolate a problem with the colder weather.

Vit can not hold idle unless hot. Very strong exhaust smell. Rough acceleration but runs fine once its going.

Going to change oil/filter/plugs/leads/airfilter/in line fuel filter tomorrow.

After that I'll be replacing the carby gasket (as the last one was pretty dodge) and perhaps the dizzy cap.

Any ideas what it could be?

Cheers

I changed the thread title for the new issues being asked about.

Ran fine in summer, as it started to get colder, it would happen on first startup in the morning, but 30secs of 1k rpm held with the accelerator pedal had it idle smoothly.

The colder it has gotten, now I can drive for ten minutes and it will still stall when I stop. A 20min drive has it idling fine once stopped.

Any ideas where I could start looking?

Sounds to me like your idle up isnt working... its the big round metal disc lookin thing on the carby, it has a cable and spring coming out of the centre of it... it may just need adjusting... when was the last time you had the carby tuned, they run heaps better when properly tuned... :D

The Vit has a fuel filter near the fuel tank, its located just in front of the fuel tank, its attached to the driver side chassis rail, i would change that one first, as it can get pretty blocked up, when i had my Vit and changed it, it was full of crap...

Alright. So I've done some work :)

You were right MacBear, the idle up wasnt working. If I held it with a spanner and started, it idled fine.

I replaced the plugs, leads, air filter, installed a fuel filter, changed oil and oil filter just as a part of regular maintenance.

Then starting up the first time it idled fine from cold. I checked the idle up mechanism and it was moving where it was not before. But the idle crept up, and up, and up... 1500...2000.

I went for a drive around the block for five or so minutes, pulled back into the driveway... idle is at 2500 and wont go down.

Where next? At the moment, the idle is so high the car is essentially driving itself :P

Any advice appreciated!

Alright, went out and pinched all the hoses off the carby to check for a vacuum leak. Didn't find one.

Noticed that the idle up was now stuck on by the look of it. Bot of a tap and some adjusting of the position seemed to get the idle to settle back down to 800rpm.

The real test will be tomorrow morning in the cold.

Thanks all for the advice :)

I hope you realize that the idle up solinoid is Only activated by the use of acc. Such as fan blower, headlights.

Normal driving the carb does not rely on this as a base Idle setting. It will only raise your rpm 100-200rpm to account for extra current draw when high load acc are turned on.

It sound like you have tightened this way too much to account for the shitty idle thus once warm and choke closes you are holding the carb butterfly open alot more.

Back the screw back out so there is no tension on the diaphram linkage. Now you can start looking for the real issue.

A partially blocked idle jet will have similar symptoms as you described.
I would look at the ole smothering trick. I'm on my stinking iPhone and would love to explain the procedure but I ain't got 2 hours to type it. Search blocked idle jet.

This is a strong indication of a blocked idle jet. A blocked idle jet will cause the engine to pull fuel from the primary jet and overfueling itself thus the smell and stalling.

Cheers for the responses. It looks like the easiest way to do this is to swap leads 1 + 4 and give it a few good revs and get some backfiring action happening. Or to smother the carby intake until it almost stalls.

Not sure how to manually clean the idle jet, not sure what I would be looking for.

I'll have a look tomorrow if it doesn't start in the cold.

Smother it. When you do it. Rev to 4k and hold the throttle open whilst smothering. Just before it stalls remove the rag or smother device. Repeat a few times.

Yeah i realised that afterwards about the idle up, lol, my next suggestion was going to be the auto choke or the jets... but it appears its the idle jet... you could try spraying some carby cleaner in and around the carby, and let it soak in a bit, before trying the smothering trick... it may help... :D

Okay, as expected, the problem is still there. No idle again this morning when cold, stalls as soon as I take my foot off the accelerator.

Once I got home, swapped leads 1 and 4 and let it splutter a few times with a few good revs. Then took the air filter off and revved/smothered the carby 5 or 6 times and also got a thin piece of wire and poked it down what looked like the jets.

If it's not the idle jet, what else could it be?

How would I go about checking and fixing the auto choke if thats the next thing to look at?

If your idle jet is still blocked it's going to keep playing up.

Your choke is obviously working if there is fuel smell at the exhaust.

The carb may have to be pulled down and cleaned/cleared with compresses air. I would be looking at a carby kit and doing this regardless before you start pulling your hair out. Not only that your going to start messing around with shit that aint the problem and come out the other end with a useless carb.

Have been offered a replacement carb in good working condition for $50. Not really confident in stripping down and rebuilding the carb. It's a drive-everyday kind of vehicle. With a replacement carb I can just number the hoses and swap it over.

The only other thing I can think of if you are certain that it is still the idle jet and not the choke, is getting some carby cleaner and just soaking the jets and trying the smother method again. But if that doesnt work, it's either to a mecho's to get it sorted or change the carb.

There is no other component that could be causing this apart from the carburettor?

Mine does this as well.

I just rev it a few times and it's fine.

Tried everything to fix it. I'm going to change the fuel pump next.
