I know this is an odd engine to pick but i am just wondering if it would be worth while looking into?
My old man has a 2.8 TD rodeo and its a good truck, pulled a poptop caravan around aus and was still getting 8.7L X 100km sitting on 90- 100 km p/h
There also fairly cheap to buy aswell...... for a diesel anyway.
Let me know what you think, i think it might suit a LWB more than a SWB

I've often thought about this engine combo in a zook, but i think it would be way to heavy for the front of a Zook. Also would be hard to engineer it all and make it road legal...

Have you done a weight comparison?
Not having a go but is that an assumption or a fact?

I can lift a 1.3, complete, by my self, & can only just lift the HEAD of said diesel....
 just guessing mate.....

fair enough, but what do they weigh apposed to a V6 commodore engine?
Anwhy doe it matter that much about an engine being heavy? upgrade brakes and spring and it should be fine shoudnt it?

nagz, i too would love a diesel powered zook, however the world and grimbo are against you and until you can afford a gazillion dollars to import one of those trick VW or purgeot diesel alloy block jobbies your stuck with the tried and tested G series zook donks. if you want more grunt put bussa engine in and take heaps of pics....

G16B
Dave Luke has a zook with v8 in it, scary to drive apparently!
Keep it light and nimble.

You could always try and import a 1.5lt TD jimny donk from japan.

have often thought about the exact same thing, what would the weight of one of those alloy euro jobs be? would it be worth starting to stalk the damaged/smashed auctions?

the problem with the alloy euro new ones is the computer and immobilisation on them...

Well there has to be some kind of diesel engine that is cheap enough, not to heavy and not to electrically challenging. Im going to hunt.

Nope there built for a constant rev range so they are not suitable. That one has already been discussed, im going to spend all day at work 2moro looking.

Besides the weight there is the gearing issue. Where a G series zook motor dosn't mind a few revs, the Rodeo donk is on the govenor at 4000-4250 rpm.
Even if you could make it fit and get an engineer on side, i'll guess and say the Rodeo gearbox/transfer and maybe lux diffs would also be on the drawing board to help sort out the gearing issues. You would be aiming for revs at 100kph to be in the 2600-2800rpm zone.
4JB1T 74kw @ 3800 rpm
225Nm @ 1800 rpm

My mate has a 3l isuzu desiel in his lwb
It's has stupid amount of power and just breaks[marq=up] stuff all the time.
At tuff truck it came down on a log and all that weight over the front end bent the chassis like a banana
I think oilers are great for pulling big loads like touring but the short rev range would be a pita off road
Also u don't want to get a motor over seas as it would be a pita getting it compliant
If u had To have a desiel I would go the new 2l Kia desiel and 6 speed auto
Would cost a fortune but has shit loads of power

Then why bother
J20A has 100KW and 180NM and is far lighter and less mucking around easy to engineer legally.

not to mention a usable rev range .

Next to nothing.
I'd say less than 10kg.

Thats it, while this engine suits my (much heavier) Rodeo well, its realistic rev range is 1500-3500 rpm.
You would get sick of changing gears with this steup in a zook

I don't know how many people have had experience with Diesel's in Zooks. we have had a couple in the club.
One was a Gemini diesel conversion to a 1.0 litre.
This car still ran 1.3WT diffs, gearing in the transfer, and 31's/33's. It apparently ran OK on road, was torquey off road, but nonetheless, the owner put a 1.3 in it after a while and never went back to a diesel.
The other was a car that came down from NSW. It ran a 2.8 turbodiesel, 4 speed auto and transfer (I think) from an isuzu Mu. (So Jackeroo/rodeo)
It was a factory WT LWB with a fibreglass hardtop.
It had been coil converted, ran hilux diffs, lots of body lift to clear the motor, and whilst it was almost cool and engineer approved, I think it was completely pointless.
It ran 33's (and was very tall with them on)- which is no increase over what we can reliably run down here. It had quite a lot of punch, but I'm not sure if it was really more than a G16B, it had lots of flex, but it was very loose and uncontrolled, and it was set up for touring, but from my short drive in it, it was far too noisy, creaky and drafty to use for long touring drives.
It was apparently rated for some huge tow capacity too.
Whilst the car was an impressive feat of packaging and did work quite reliably, Im my opinion, it was less than the sum of its parts. Too heavy, too tall (necessary to clear the motor, sump etc) and the benefits of the driveline (smooth highway power) were defeated by the cramped, agricultural nature of a sierra and the wobbly height demanded by the driveline.
Oh and monkey - from memory (there was another thread on this?) those 1.5 Diesel Jimny motors have less power and torque than a G16B.
I think part of the problem with the perceived benefits of diesels are due to all the fuelled up, whistling 3" exhasuted 4.2 Patrols around. They are pretty cool, I'll admit, and one day, I'll own something with a 4BT/6BT cummins in it for the same reason. But in truth, small diesels aren't like that. Small diesels are being engineered to be car like because that's what they are going in, and they don't have the character of those big mechanical pump truck motors.
I think in coming years swaps to 4 cylinder Mercedes, BMW or Korean RWD configured diesels might become possible, but they are always going to be more expensive and complex than a petrol conversion and cause more driveline dramas due to the high torque figure at low revs.
Ultimately, if you want a car that justifies a diesel, I don't think you want a sierra. A vitara - maybe, but if outright capability is no longer as important then it's probably better to buy a car that had a diesel in it in the first place.
Steve

There was a LWB Sierra getting around in a Zook club running a 1.8 Litre Diesel gemini motor that apparently was a pretty good set up!
