Hi, I've got a 2001 Jimny Soft-top, manual m13a. Done 125,000 ks.
It has started making a rattling sound under acceleration, mainly in 3rd and 4th gear, its mainly at 2000-3000 rpm, when its doing around 30-50kph. It doesn't seem to do it in low gear, even at high revs or in 5th gear at higher speeds. The engine sounds normal when revved in neutral up to high rpm.

I reckon the posibilities are pinging when the engine is working harder under acceleration or from some other forums its been suggested that it could be relatged to the transfer case, or the gear box. I've also had some radiator issues that are being sorted, I want to rule out the coolant system being involved in the rattle.

Can anyone suggest how to diagnose the problem, I'm trying to avoid throwing cash at maintanece while I save up for mods.

Any help would be much appreciated.

What fuel are you running?

I tried E10 for a while, and experienced similar pinging as you.

I have now switched back to Premium and it disappeared, plus I get more economy now.

I'm just using the cheap stuff. I'll give premium a go but I doubt a 1.3l would need high octane fuel.

the 1.3 won't need high octane.

It might be the ethanol playing with your engine.e10

Get some normal unleaded to full premium, not e10.

Engine size has nothing to do with octane requirements. Its to do with compression and timing.

Smaller, high compression engines are in fact more in need of octane than big lazy V8s etc.

I don't know about the Jimny, but the Sierra loves 98 RON. On 91 even with stock timing etc it does ping and knock a little on 91 RON fuel...

I agree with Tim 100%.
E10 made my Jimny run like shit, idle was unpredictable, economy was crap and pinged like hell.
Normal and premium unleaded made her run smoother, stopped the pinging and the economy was much better.
Under throttle I can feel the difference three fold.

i am pretty sure suzuki does not recommend running any sort of ethanol blended fuel.

Do we even get E10 fuel in Perth? I've yet to see it offered.

Edit: With regards to the 91, 95 and 98 ron fuels available in Perth. The carby specialist I spoke to last year said that the 91 ron is a sub standard fuel and shouldn't even be sold to the general public.

I run my zook on 98 and only on 95 if I have to.

Suzuki specifies 95 min, apart from the diesel's...

Put good fuel in it, E10 or std ulp is devil sporn & like goat's in the wrong way,



95 MIN that's even in you owner's manual..

95 MIN that's even in you owner's manual..


I'm pretty sure most late model cars specify 95octane as their required min spec.
its even on some servo pumps they recommend 95 octane for 90 onward vehicles
91 octane fuel is crap and only sold as its just good enough for to move your average tightarses vehicle to a semi acceptable standard, it doesnt mean its any good for your engine

Thanks guys. I've been using 91 (not e10). Next time I fill up will definitely go for at least 95. Fingers crossed it is just pinging.

You must remember that in Japan, and Europe, you can't buy shitty 91RON fuel, so chances are they aren't built to run on such crap...

I think you'll find if it was tested it's probably only high 80's RON. It does my Hiace ok though :lol: :lol: I always stuck Shell's 98RON petrol in my Zook and never had a problem.

I run United's 95 (E10) in new 2010 Jimny and have had no problems .

I also have United's E10 95 ron in my Toyota Cressida and Hiace and they both run great for the last 4 years or so.

So I'm all for United fuels 95 E10 its also cheaper than Unleaded std fuel.

i have been using E10 for the past few months now and the jimny has been running really bad. On cold start up there is a weird rattling sound after the motor has been started. i have had the car back to suzki twice now and they cant find anything wrong with the car. yesterday when i went to start the car it would not start. it was like it was flooded with a strong smell of petrol. told the dealership of the problem and told them i was using E10 they told me that will caues the car to run rough and will also caues the car not to start straight off. put 20 ltrs of 95 in her last night went and started it today kick over straight away. found it was rolling over a few times before it would start when i was using the E10.

i didnt think that E10 petrol could caues so many problems with the engine and would cause the motor not to start right.

i will be sticking to 95 from now on

So which refinery does it come from Mobil or Shell????

United would just buy the cheapest fuel it can from either refinery and have it pumped to them. The ethanol is blended in on site at the fuel depot.

May be be blended to "united" specs but most likely it will be exactly the same as the other companies fuels. United is not big enough to have its own separate storage division let alone a blending recipe of there own developed.
