Stoppped the GV the other day and burnt oil smoke was coming from under the bonnet. Tryed to find the problem but it looked like the front main seal so took it too the mechanic.
Its a Suzuki Gv 1999 2.5 litre V6, after the mechanic inspected it, turns out both the main seals are blown. So gearbox out job. So while he was at it I said fuck it fix the dodgy gearbox too.
Turns out the the PCV valve was all clogged up hence the problem. So one gearbox $1250 two main seals one pcv valve= $1200 mechanic bill its going again, ouch
Checked the engine today the front main seal is leaking again. So back to the mechanics tommorrow.
I trust the mechnic hes a friend and all the work he has done before has been good. Checked the new pcv and its flowing air fine along with the hoses. So I guess the problem is else where.
Anyone come across this problem before ? Or any ideas what it could be.
Thanks for any input Feral

Yeh i was thinking the same. The aftermarket seals are not as good as the genuine ones and will have to be lubricated proir to install.

Yeah if your PCV is in good nick, then it has to be an issue with the seals, it can't be crankcase/valve cover pressure.
Just for shits, pull the oil cap off while it is running, and see if you get a lot of air/smoke puffing out.

Good quality seals were used, one genuine the other was some special one he got in. Would be very surprised if he's placed the seal in incorrectly. Curious if its something else causing the problem.

Even for a pro, nicking a seal is easy done. Happens all the time. At least its the front!

It can only be a few things:
Seal nicked on install
Crank seal face worn
Excessive crankcase pressure due to blowby
As stated before, pull the oil cap off while car is running and check for any smoke and pressure by placing hand on outlet.
I would get a leakdown test done. This will soon rule out the blowby issue.

There are sleeves that you can fit to the crankshaft snout that will help the front seal they are available at the bearing supply shops have fitted a few myself on old holden red motors and they work very well. Wish you luck.

Turns out the front seal is fine theres another seal around the front of the engine some place. Talking to the mechanic is reckons something else is wrong. He's a bit worried it has blown out 3 seals at once. What i thought was cam chain rattle is the big ends. So thinking new engine is the best option.
Will try and talk to the mechanic today to sus out the besy option.

Holly shit... That's a fair change from a couple of blown seals to rooted BEBs (and presumably most of the rest of the motor...)

This is a dumb Q...but what damages Big End Bearings? Lack/contamination of oil?

Detonation is a pretty good killer of them
You wouldnt think it would be an oil quality issues as by rights the Cahin should rattle its ass off

Incorrect timing, Shitty Fuel, Not serviced regularly, Pinging, Incorrect Fuel/Air Ratio, A Piece missing of your Harmonic Balancer.... Theres a million reasons why they throw bearings, basically it comes down to anything that causes it to be unbalanced or Out of Sync.

Is it just me - or - do big end bearings produce more of a knock than a rattle?
The other point I want to raise is this - there is only one seal on the front of that engine. In fact if I ignore "O-rings" and valve stem seals, there are only three seals in the entire engine - the crankshaft front seal, the rear main seal, and the third is internal to the cam position sensor (which Suzuki does not sell as a separate item).
I know you say you trust the mechainc - but - you can see where I'm headed, so I'll stop here.

With a properly rooted set of BEB you should be able to throw a breaker bar on the harmonic balancer bolt, and by rocking the crank back and forth a few degrees you should be able to feel the slop in the BEBs...
There is of course all the flange surfaces that are stuck together with RTV silicone. Pretty typical for them to leak. Not something you "blow" though, just happens over time with thermal cycling.
