they are terrible onroad in every way, the spool will chew them out real quick but at least its better than an autolocker onroad

Gotta remember how light a zook actually is.
My friend ran the extremes on his front and rear welded coily every day and after 2 years the things still look like new.

i got my simex ETs down to 50% tread within a year of driving daily and 4wding regularly, driving around 350km/week - so 18,000km.
i know the extremes are different compound but it'll give an idea.
you'd be better off buying some cheap kumhos or something as road tyres and swapping the muddies on specifically for 4wding - youll get way better life out of them then, and save money on replacing the expensive tyres.

once you adapt your driving style to the locked rear its not really an issue. only problem i have is for example is when stopping for fuel at servos with concrete, the tyres make very loud chirping noises. mines not a daily so not an issue for me.
I'm still yet to try u-turns or roundabouts in the wet

Different courses.....
I like driving with a rear locker (welded or spool) on the street. I think the car becomes way more predictable.
In a Sierra the difference was very small as it's slow and has minimum power.
Just remember they are illegal and very noisy in concrete car parks.
Another thing worth considering before you spend money on a set of tyres and rims is the air locker. A good set of muddies is $1000 and rims $400. If you are handy you could install a airlocker for not much more than that.

ive never tried an autolocker before so cant comment on that, but spool/welded is quite easy to get used to. and is absolutely awesome offroad!

I had a welded diff In my old mazda, weighed around 1100kg.
With street tyres, not really grippy ones either it was a bitch to do u turns, and people often thought I was trying to do burnouts when it screeched around corners.
Make sure you check your wheel nuts often, I nearly lost a wheel a couple of times when the shook loose.
Used to snap wheel studs fairly regularaly too, rear tyres lasted about 2 months, but there were other reasons for that...
I'd never go a spool or welded for a car that's regularly road driven again, too much of a pain in the arse.

I DD mine when i could.
Pro's outweighed the cons.
Never snapped a stud, might happen on an old mazda with small pcd 4 stud..
Tyres lasted years.
If you dont want to pull it out and give it to me, Its a fairly big job and i dont have to time or want to work on it unless you give me the actual centre to put it in, Thats where is technical. Everything else is bolt on bolt off.

I wore a set of 4 31" MTR's down to useless in 35000km with a welded rear
In contrast same type of tyre in a different size lasted 70000km on a non welded GV, I also get 60000km from a get of ATR's on a Vitara
IMO it makes it worth buying an airlocker if you plan to keep the car and drive it on road for a few years in tyre savings alone, I dont consider buying cheap shitty tyres as a way out cause cheap tyres are shit and have no place on the road

I would think that a spool would be terrible on the street, because it never unlocks.
My autolocker is great on road, I just clutch in around round-a-bouts and tight turns, only time it ever plays up is on u-turns or very rarely in car parks when parking.
Cheers

i'd prefer welded/spool or air locker. auto locker gets annoying cos it does what it wants.

I've seen dudes with spools smash their tyres to shit in a few months and do nothing but complain everyturn is like driving on corrugated iron plus it rattles the car lose everyday he checked wheel nuts number plate screws all that jazz I'd go air locker as it saves you the shit you'd put up with everyday

mate just get the auto locker, i got one in the rear of my shorty vit and its NOT that bad. its not unpredictable at all, i can make it hop, jump, skip etc etc but i choose not to. its all in good time and driving practice. i drive mine every day 70km return from work. so mine is pretty worn in, dont have any issues besides the odd thunk which just mean that its doing it job

they must be in dodgy diffs then because along straights and even light to medium cornering you'd never even know it was there. sharp corners at low speed creates chirping noises and you can feel the tyres slipping but its certainly not rough
they do however chew the rear tyres. but tyre longevity vs offroad capability. no brainer for me

As usual we have lots of people who have never had an auto locker speaking from their LACK of experience, and people who only ever drive in a straight line who say that a spool or welded diff does little in the way of tyre wear. Listen to someone who actually has or has had these options, i.e shandy, Royce

well said 2stroker, if you get an AUTOlocker installed correctly or even incorrectly you wont get any increased wear on the rear tyres! unless you plan on using the locker to do burnouts etc.
i have had my locker for 6-9 months and my last set of tyres didnt show any signs of wear, only got replaced because of wear on the front due to bad wheel alignment.
oh and autolockers dont chirp around corners, well mines a lockrite locker and its doesnt. wet road handling etc lets just say that i cannot "drift" around corners and it doent break traction when going around corners at speed in the wet, maybe a bit of understeed but thats the new oversteers
mine is set up very loosly tho, for example it will ratchet on grass and sometimes gravel!

I havent had any noticeable tyre wear at all with my rear auto locker. if i put enough power down i get some squeals in car parks, but when aired down to 10pound the tyres sound pretty horrible and surrounding people freak out.
Its the driveability on wide long turns that i dont like, and i'd prefer a spool in that situation.

i have a swb vitara and a lockrite auto locker in the rear and half the time i forget its even there. it doesnt wear down my tyres coz it only engages when i put my foot down (not much power anyway so thats rare) and it just clicks which isnt very loud when cornering

Lol.
That's retarded. I think blaming a spool for what's clearly a rubbish car is pretty lame.
My spool does none of that. I've been spooled for years through 1.0, 1.3 and vitara rear diffs. I don't daily my car, but the things that make my car unsuitable to daily have nothing to do with the spool. In fact I was driving mine the other day with a bolt out of a rear radius arm, and lowering the rear roll stiffness made the effects of the spool totally disappear - you would never have known it had a spool in it.
Steve.

Understeer, so you back off, then oversteer, etc etc. cos you've accelerating with a wide long turn.
There are a couple of big roundabouts in newy that get annoying to drive. im used to it, but when i drive an open centre car it feels like luxury.
But mine is set tight. As you said yours is loose.
