Hey guys,
Thinking of making an auxiliary fuel tank for my jimny and slot it in-between my tow bar, where the muffler currently sits, once my exhaust is re-routed.
Just wondering what you all think and any feedback regarding possible problems etc.
I roughly measured out and will get close to 30L I think if I can make it to the size I want.
Cheers, Tim

Have you worked out how to transfer fuel between the tanks?
Steve
Not being a smartarse, just curious on how you are planning to do this.

Yeah that's something I'm still thinking of, a few mates are mechanics and I was going to pick their brain on either a fuel pump on a switch or maybe if it's possible, wiring a fuel pump to the existing one to pump fuel in as it's burned.? Anyone with ideas on this? I just don't want to carry jerrys lol

we have a few cars at work (not SUZUKI) that are set up on a switch.
Essentially set up as two separate fuel tanks 2 fill points, one each side of the car 2 fuel pumps and separate lines up to a solenoid then one line from their on
Ill chase up some better info if you would like so that im not "bum steering" you

use one of these:
its a pollak 6 port fuel valve and it will set you back about $150. I've brought one for my sierra, haven't installed it yet though.

what about venting the main tank to the pick up (bottom) of aux and than vent aux to the charcoal canister.
the fuel will be drawn from the aux tank as a vacuum is created from the main fuel tank level dropping

I would assume that means there is no vent on either tank to make the vacuum? Would this make it non ADR compliant?

Both tanks would vent from charcoal canister main tank would draw fuel from aux before emptying than drawing air from aux via charcoal this was how longranger tanks worked on early 40 series land cruisers, also on rally bikes with rear tanks (Dakar etc) just an idea
If you had no vent on a fuel tank the engine would stop before the tank ran out of fuel.
no

if both tanks are at the same level, (top and bottom)
with the breathers both linked together,
and a decent internal diameter fuel line-fitted low down on both tanks, (I have seen the sediment drain in the bottom of the tanks used)
they will naturally transfer between both tanks- while needing only one fill point
only disadvantage is you need to allow time for fuel to transfer tank to tank while refuelling- thats why you use large diameter fuel hose.
I did this years ago with a V6 capri and it worked well.
if using sediment drain points on the tanks, just fit a decent water seperator type fuel filter
or you can do like Mahindra did with thier CJ3B jeeps twin tanks, simple fuel transfer pump from secondary tank to primary tank.
but this needs 2 fill points.

Any pics by chance on the Capri?
How large a diameter would you recommend?

I like this idea alot... Sounds easier than having two fill points and a pump.

The V6 capri came with a 60 litre tank, 4 cyl. capri's had a 40 litre tank, I mounted a 40 litre tank behind my 60 litre, linked with (IIRC) 3/4 or possibly 1" hose, through fittings a mate of mine silver soldered onto the tanks (out of vehicle, washed out, and filled with water while soldering)
Breathers back then just vented to atmosphere and expansion hose overflowed onto the ground, I hung a charcoal canister to try and kill the smell of petrol. When filling- I just waited for the nozzle to click off, then checked my oil etc, by then it was ready to top off the tanks.
There wasnt much room in the boot for the spare tyre!
I will try and find photos of the old girl, unfortunately she has gone to the great wrecking yard in the sky( actually her remains are rusting away in country western australia.)

I have been in contact with Outdoor Auto in Brisbane and this guy is working on a Jimny tank at the moment. It is not ready quite yet but I believe he is fitting his first one this week. I am not sure what process he uses for transferring fuel. It sits where the muffler currently is between the tow bar and the existing fuel tank.
Since I am going to do an exhaust upgrade soon I would like to know where you put the muffler and what muffler you used please Tim. Did you keep the resonator as well and how did it turn out for noise in the cabin?
Thanks
Mike

If it's from Outdoor Auto then expect to pay lots for it....and some people think ARB pricing is bad.

Thanks Mike
I didn't end up doing it yet, one guy said it would be too loud, however the 2 inch hardly makes a noise in the cabin, only a low warble sound.
The guy that was going to originally do it said he would put a small muffler under the passenger side on the inside of the chassis rail, and bring it out at the rear passenger side.
I'd definitely be interested in an ODA one... Most of the reason for not doing it is cause I couldn't be sears making the tank and figuring out how to pump it lol

I spoke to ODA last week and he mentioned around $1,000 for the tank but I don't know what that will include. This is good compared to what the Longranger quoted me. I did read I think on this site that moving the muffler forward would significantly increase the cabin noise. It was in the the Jimny exhaust thread.

I could put up with the noise I reckon... Let me know when you hear more... $1000 is reasonable I reckon

An update on the ODA tank. I called Tim last week and he does not have it ready yet but his price is now $1,800 so it is off my agenda. Back to two Jerry cans at that price.
