Bosch VL commodore pump is fairly common mate. But without an in tank pump, you should really run a low pressure lifter pump into a surge tank aswell.

hehe unfortunately getting anything for sierras up this way are near impossible and the cost of freight is ridiculous for larger items.

Repco want $209 for the miser and $249 for the Bosch. There a tad cheaper on ebay so i might go one of them. Also does anyone have a preference on the lifter pump and surge tank ?

Don't worry about the bosh pump...setting up surge tanks or getting a coily tank either
Was doing alot of research on this and thanks to MrRocky and his wisdom i brought a second hand fuel pump from the wreckers
You need to get the Diahatsu Feroza 1.6 EFi fuel pump ($165 from wreckers or $370 new)..... comes with a rubber mount that is perfect and works like a treat

Is this the VL pump everyone talks about?

Does this drop straight into the standard sierra tank? Is it a complete pump assembly that you're talking about?

From my understanding the reason people run a surge tank is due to the standard sierra tank not being baffled. Means when all you full hektik rock krawlers are on maddest angles and fuel moves away from the single pick up tube ya car stalls out.
for an extra $110 or so you won't ever have to worry and have a flash surge tank and dak dak pump and all bits n bobs.

Ignore the wires, haven't tidied it up yet, just making sure it all works proper job before making it permanent.

Each to their own and all, but this is exactly why I don't like external fuel pumps.
I count 14 potential leak points, wiring akimbo (yes I know it needs a "tidy up" but there's terminals and wiring under the car that doesn't need to be there), two electric pumps that aren't really designed to work submerged in muddy water... all under the car exactly where they are going to be getting pounded by stuff coming off the wheels etc.
If you put it in the cabin it's noisy, fumey and takes up lots of room.
There's a reason that no factory car runs an external pump any more.
I can't believe that this kind of setup is easier/cheaper than pulling a tank from any corolla/pulsar/camry/commodore/falcon/anyhting with an efi system with a return line, cutting the pump flange out, and welding it into a sierra tank. That's if you can't find a coiler or EFI vitara tank to work with.
Swimmer pumps are simpler, more reliable and quieter.
I don't believe there is any place for this kind of setup in a 4WD.
No offence to anyone in particular - I just really don't like these setups.
Steve.

Meh, Works for me. I don't have to look at it neither does anybody else. ill be making a deflector piece to stop shit flying up and hitting it. How is water going to be a problem? The pumps are sealed units? With a bit of silicone to help keep moisture out I don't see there being a problem. I may even fold up some sheet metal and make a completely sealed box that attaches to the underside that these sit in, and use a sealed polycarbonate lid so I can see if waters getting in. For me it was cheaper and more practical building a setup like this, then finding a fuel tank and posting, then finding the bits I need to complete. If it doesn't work then I can fix it without too many problems. If it does work then i'm onto a winner.
My rx7 runs two external 044 pumps and a 6 - 8 psi dak dak. This rx7 has done a few culvert crossing to get to home where the water comes up to the sill. The fuel system is mounted under the car. I ran this car for an entire wet season crossing two 40cm deep crossing to get home. Not once did I have any problems with my pumps or fuel delivery. When it's powering 300 rwkw on low boost it's not something you'd take lightly.
I'll let you know how I go anyway gwagen, if it fucks out you'll be the first to know.

I've seen many a crappy walbro in tank pump die in street cars Steve, never known of any Bosch external units to die prematurely. This includes quite a few 4x4's including my own that regularly see mud. I don't think it's an issue if you get a qulity bosch pump and youre wiring is up to scratch. Shit, I live in a flood zone and for a couple months a year I've got a creek crossing 20 meters from my driveway every second day haha.
Your concern does make sense though, but sometimes a surge tank is an easier option.

It's a complete external pump (looks like the external bosch one) so it just hooks up to your lines
bagnkat wrote: masterA does the Feroza pump unit have its own swirl pot?
No swirl pot
I know at least 4 people running this pump without any dramas and without any swirl pots or surge tanks....2 of the people are running the 1.6L EFI conversions and the other 2 are running 1.3 GTi conversion
You can pick this pump up from a wrecker...got mine from SuziShop (Tel: 9350 5289) for about $135 or $145 (can't remember now)
Also, you will also need an EFI fuel filter from Repco or the likes as the sierra one is plastic and it will not hold the pressure
BTW - if you need to extend fuel lines you MUST make sure that the fuel line is for EFI purposes otherwise within a couple of weeks your fuel line will have leaks due to big pressure.
