I know upgrading alternators has been discussed in the forums but I am unable to find anything specific for the G16B. Could anyone advise what alternator would easily fit increasing the output and what I would need for this... bracket, plugs etc...

I did purchase a 2nd hand Ford 110amp but I think its the wrong version?!

I haven't done the ford one, but Piranha do a kit for them.
It's not cheap though, about $400 I think

Ford all the way. No reason to look at anything else.

I assume the G16B is in a sierra based on your avatar? It's a nightmare to fit a bigger alternator onto a G16B in a vitara, but it is possible.

That's correct Steve, it is in a Sierra.

On further investigation I was sold the incorrect unit and ended up with an AU Ford alternator instead!

I'm guessing the EL version is what I'm after? Anything else I will need to go with it?

Yes! But I found is you use the stock cast mount on the g16B the alternator will be wayyy off alignment. Find a 1.3 metal alternator bracket and drill it out.
