Suzuki 4wd Club Victoria

Annual Trip #2 – The Snow Trip

Trip Facts
The Suzuki Club heads up to the snow at Mt Skene (near Jamieson) in August each year.

The Snow trip is trip the most widely attended trip that the club runs annually with challenges for vehicles and drivers of all standards and a club record of 21 vehicles (not bad for a club of 25 members).

The great thing about snow driving is that the terrain changes as each vehicle passes over it. This means that we can put the big cars at the front to cut through the snow, and the smaller cars towards the rear of the convoy by which time under body clearance will be less of an issue.

We generally run the trip in two groups – The Friday Climb, and the Saturday Climb.

The Friday Group head up to Jamieson on Thursday night, climb the hill on Friday, camp Friday night.
The Saturday Group head up to Jamieson on Friday night, climb the hill on Saturday to meet up with the Friday Climbers.

Once the two groups join up, depending on weather conditions, and time taken for the climb, we may then send groups out for short drives around the alpine area, before rejoining and either descending back down to Jamieson, or settling in for the Saturday night camp.

Trip Location and Accommodation
It is approximately 3.5 hours from Melbourne to Jamieson, then anywhere from 1 hour to all day for the climb up to Mt Skene.

Accommodation requirements differ for every member, so we leave Jamieson bookings up to each member to sort out – Thursday, Friday and or Saturday nights.

For the brave – please note that snow camping requires a fair bit of preparation and some decent quality equipment. We try to ensure that anyone that is keen for the overnight snow has everything they need (both gear wise and experience).

Trip Standards
Due to the Mt Skene Rd permit scheme (4WD Vic and Local Police agreement), all attendees must be Paid Financial Club members, and must be listed on the permit 4 weeks prior to the trip date.

Every vehicle convoy on the hill must have between 3 and 10 vehicles.

Whilst there are no minimum vehicle standards, we do ask for a bit of preparation before the trip – like ensuring your battery is in good condition and BYO jerry can because running out of fuel would be frowned upon by the local Police and the RACV

Past Trip Coverage
Here are a few happy snaps from previous snow trips. These photos also show the variation between a year with heavy snow, and a year with very little snow.

Here is a year with Heaps of snow:

The 'dry' pics looks like Mt Skene's attempt at winter last year, correct?

And in the snow pics do I spot Droopypete? Has he fallen off the face of the earth or is he still about?

this might sound silly but how would one become a finantual member of the club to do this kind of trip??
i have been wanting to do a big snow trip well since i started wheeling. would there be some way to pay a years membership and come along? or would it be required to attend X number of meetings and trips?

You can become a member without attending meetings.
You can attend some trips (easy trips) without being a member, only $10 for the insurance.

Wandin special should be on now (discounted membership), and now that the trips section of the website is open to the public you can see when the trips are on in more detail too.

If I do move to NSW when I go back to AU I will still be a VIC member and attend the snow trips and adventure tours. they are worth it.

The snow trip is in august (next financial year) so the wandin discounted price in February doesn't really apply.

We do have another member who lives in wangaratta and only attends one or two trips per year without coming to a meeting. So this sort of 'trip only' membership can and does already exist in the club.

The dates are a bit flexible due to snow fall, accommodation and road access permits, but it is always in August.

In the past we have also had day trips up to the snow to take advantage of a big dump of fresh snow, but that short notice kind of trip has gotten harder to organise with the permit scheme in place.

Hi fatzook,

Due to the permit scheme to access the mt skene rd, we require all snow trip attendees to be members of a 4WDVIC affiliated club.

If you are a club member in nsw, we could check if the two state associations are affiliated. I assume they are.

Otherwise you would need to join a club down here.

Cheers,
Greg

Fair enough. Are deciding this on a trip by trip cases or is this a general policy, Jon?

No, this trip and adventure tour are the only trips where full membership is required. All other trips are open to visitors.
