I have a 1.6 mpfi in my Sierra that has a slow leaking head gasket. I'm tossing up wether I take the head in and get tested/cleaned etc or buy a new one or get a recoed exchange unit.

What have you guys done on the past! Is there much difference cost wise?

Full reco of my f10a head cost $200 just recently. Add a VRS kit which will have all the seals and gaskets you need and you've got a cheap rebuild.
It's worth doing a compression test first to make sure piston rings are ok, if they need doing its worth doing while its apart.

New bare head is $550. Reseating valves and assembly of everything else plus VRS will take it close to $1,000. To rebuild your head probably won't be much less, depending on condition.

For a complete headjob I was charged $650, new valves, cleaned up ports, decked, no need to port match as they already done by Suzuki.

i had my f10a head just reco'ed $350 but needed alot of stuff done to it

i would say get your head at least tested if your taking it off anyways to do a head gasket you gotta get it machined. i took my 16 valve head to get it looked at from after a blown head gasket and it was soft and needed to be treadted and was crack (suposably there pretty common on the 1.6 16 valve engines) if its going to cost you $100 or so to get it checked it give your a peice of mind at least you know that you have a good head

Any good place would throw the crack test in on the quote I'd imagine. I think I'll reuse mine providing it can be. Sounds cheaper to get it recoed then buying new. It's not overheating at all. Just using water!

I'm hoping the bottom end will still be good. I guess I'll be able to have a little look while the head is off? Only the tops of the pistons

when i got my head looked at and tested they charged my $45 for it and they just said it was stuffed and would be cheaper to buy a newy. but mate give it a shot if its good then its no worries
