Hey guys, wondered if i could get a few replys here with pics of how youve mounted a UHF in the dash area of a GV and also where the aerials been mounted,

So far because i dont have a winch bar yet, im thinking about mounting the aerial off the spare wheel holder somehow.

Also while on the topic of UHF, how short can i go ? to be honest i really only need 1km range at most while out and about on trips and dont want anything to long which is liley to get ripped off in the bush.

Hey mate... In relation to the antenna (I'm guessing that's what your referring to length wise) where you mount it will impact on its ability to work... Obviously the closer to obstructions like the tailgate of your 4bie will have a negative impact on performance. Unless you mount it somewhere with a good ground plane like the middle of the roof which your obviously not going to do you'll need an elevated feed which will make it ground plane independent. Will also let you put in on a spring base too... I did mount an antenna of my spare ona previous 4bie and it worked ok most of the time.

My current setups have been mounted on the bull bar with spring base and elevated feed. I have 2 antennas ones a 4.5 db fibreglass whip which when attached to the elevated feed becomes 6db giving good range on hiways and long distance runs and it's not too long. For bush work, convoys, shorter range and lots of obstructions eg hills etc I have a mini whip (unity gain)which is about 15cms long.

What model GV is it? new or old shape?

Easiest options for the UHF are either in one of the DIN slots (replace the digital clock/pocket) or on the side of the transmission tunnel. Failing that you can get creative and mount it pretty much anywhere - I mounted mine in the top shelf section which is otherwise completely useless. Good spot IMO as its easy to see, not in the way of your legs, and it is up high enough that the mic cord doesn't get in the way of the gear stick.



For the antenna, easiest option is just a z bracket out the bonnet. Nice short cable run as well so whatever cable comes with the antenna should be long enough.

Most Antennas come pre tuned now... Its best not to go chopping up the cable that they come with or you risk stuffing the tuning... If the cable too long just find a nice spot out of the way to tie up the excess...

Hey, thanks for the reply, yeh sorry i was referring to the length. As you noted with your setup... the bullbar is prob a good place to mount really and i like the idea of being close to the unit to simplify cabling.... also good to hear there are smaller options (mini whip) which ill definatly look at because ill be doing a mixture of beach/dune driving.... along with bush driving where the smaller whip is less likley to get ripped off.

thanks for the pic, i remember reading through your thread last week and thinking it was a cool place to mount... how did you get the screws in for the mounting bracket ? I do like the idea of it being at eye level and being able to just reach out and grab the hand peice rather than down towards the gear stick or din slot.

Here's mine.....ofcourse will only work if you have a ufh with the buttons on the hand piece. I mounted the unit under the plastics next to the cd player, and the handpiece clip is screwed to the 2 blanks on the dash. Cord comes out front next to the headlight stalk. The other wires you see there are for my gps.

I've got one that has all the buttons on the controller so i mounted the box here behind the plastic with the red square



Then just ran the wires through the gap below the steering wheel and mounted it next to it. i can use it without having to take it off the mount.
