I've found a G16B Baleno engine with 146000km's at the wreckers for $770. He's also got a computer there for about $110. Out the back of the yard is a Baleno body, minus the engine.

The engine, which is inside on the shelf, has some wiring, but not the whole lume, it is a May '97 engine from a GLX 4 door wagon. The Baleno body out the back has a lume and is also a May '97 wagon (model EGC31W).

So, "theoretically", there should be pretty much everything there to do the conversion.

Obviously, there will still have to be some fabbing, because the Baleno is an East West engine. Other parts I will start collecting, Vit tank and extractors etc, etc... I had a look at the Baleno tank, but it was way too big.

My question is regarding the lume in the body.
If I was to have them pull it out, how far back should they go? I doubt they would go to the trouble of labeling everything for me. So I need to be able to work out what is what.

when i pulled mine out of a car i took the computer and every thing between the computer and the engine(the computer sits under the glovebox. With it being a GLX make sure its a g16b as i thought the glx was a 1.8 litre sports. the engine loom is pretty well seperated from the rest of the car.

once you get all the factory binding off its pretty easy. it will nearly all unplug besides a few earths.

If its anything like a vitara, there will be one plug on the left and right of the firewall, one to each door and one to the rear of the car which most likely goes through near the gearstick.

Thanks for the replys fellas.

Tanshi - I haven't been able to have a close inspection of the block yet, it's up on a shelf wrapped in plastic. Will it have some markings on the block to identify it? What am I looking for?

Taff - The wiring that's still in the body does look very simple as it is.

BlueSuzy - I have downloaded your build threads from here and outers. I'm reading through them and making notes

What if I got them to rip out the whole dash with wiring intact? That way I get the speedo/tacho as well?

I wonder if the Baleno EFI pump will fit into a coily tank???

Wrong. Bow bow.

If he has the coil/dizzy motor.. it still wont work. But i wouldnt bother with the dizzy motor as it comes straight out of the head into the firewall..

Baleno speedo + vss is electronic. Not cable

My thread is for coilpack models. It has it all i think....

Vit/swift cable drive internals with vss with speedo arrow etc.
Stock speedo face or vit or baleno faces.
Baleno tacho internals. Stock sierra tacho doesnt work with twin coils..

I have vit internal speedo with vss.
Baleno tacho internals.
Baleno speedo and tacho faces/gauges.
Sierra temp and fuel gauges.

All in sierra cluster.

once this conversion is done its an awsome motor but a Vitara 1.6 conversion is such an easier install. A mate has done the baleno to his sierra and has no end of dramas getting it right. There is not alot of tech to help you. The only real advantage is it has coil packs and not a dizzy.

So what advantage is there, of the coil pack over the dizzy?

Power? Torque? Fuel consumption?

Dizzy dimensions is shit. Like i said. dizzy comes straight out of the head into the firewall!!

The whole point in doing the baleno motor conversion is to piss it off! No dizzy at all.

If u get the motor with the stupid dizzy. your in the same boat as the people that do efi 1.6 swift motors etc.(not 1.3). You will have to change heads with a vitara head with angle drive dizzy and cams etc. Alot of work for what you just paid for a whole motor then now you need a new head etc etc. I just dont see the point.

Coilpacks would only slightly be more powerful anyway..

On the other hand if you start with a vitara engine you dont need to change anything.

Not even your radiator hoses.

On the upside Baleno motors are generally (significantly) cheaper than Vit motors.

My vit conversion was under 1500. Thats after selling off the bits and peices that were replaced. I bought a complete wreck and it worked out pretty good. Engine has 160,000 on it though.

I did all the work myself, except the wiring.

OK, so I'm keen to get this going again...

I was thinking about the need for a coily tank (rare) or a surge tank (more stuffing around) and then thought, why not just put in a coily long-range tank?? I know it's more expensive, but I've always wanted a long-range tank anyway  This will just bolt in right? Then all I need is the right fuel pump - correct?

And does anyone know of a good source for front-cuts? Obviously I'll have to get it shipped to Tassie, so I spose somewhere in Vic would be good.

I've also got ECU, air-intake bits, and throttle cable.
Ben-T adaptor kit arrived last week - very fast service too!! :D
Now I just have to sort out fueling, water pipes and exhaust.

The only wiring I think I'm missing is to the fuel pump...

Here's some more "bits".

Is this the IAT sensor? There is nothing plugged into the actual airbox.

Fitted the 110amp alternator today. Was almost a direct bolt-on :D
I used the Baleno brackets, just had to grind off a small amount.

Lume is unplugged - ready to be stripped back.

Can anyone tell me, is there supposed to be anything here?
