Hi everyone, I've been reading about engine swaps and think that I finally made my mind, i'm looking for a m18 engine. I have a 2009 Jimny and m series engines are pretty hard to come by here in costa rica, and a friend of mine just broke his engine and offered to buy mine, so if I can get my hands on a m18, I think i'm going to sell it. I just have a few questions, clearly there is a difference between rods, crank, etc... but besides that, does the water pump and gaskets from any other m series fit? (m18 aren't available in my country, so i'm worried about spare parts).
Has anyone compared a m18 jimny and a m16 one?

Thanks for your help...

The only thing you'll use is the engine. All the peripherals come from the Jimny (Water Pump, alternator, pulleys, air box, Rocker Cover, Sump/oil pickup, exhaust manifold, wiring harness, etc, etc)

1.8 definitely has more vibration in my case, I put it down to the lighter Jimny flywheel. Next time I have the box out I'll be swapping to Liana flywheel and clutch

I had an annoying vibration at 3200 rpm which I'd been chasing for ages, turned out to be slightly loose exhaust hanger at the rear box mount

I am getting engine surging when trying to rest around 2000 rpm in lower gears (2nd and 3rd). Might be in higher gears also but not as noticeable.

Anyone else getting this issue?

Are you using the M13A or M18A throttle body? I definitely recommend the M18A throttle body as it is much larger diameter.

Try cleaning the IAC valve. Mine was all gummed up and sticky and once I cleaned it out the surging stopped. You'll need a 5 pointed torx driver to remove the IAC motor from the throttle body.

Only very recently done the swap.

It is not a rev drop it is more like the car is trying to go faster. It is hard to explain.

Could it be a fueling issue?

Also, did you use the M18 injectors?

I haven't got a comparison photo but here is a photo of one of the M13A injectors showing numbers.

If I recall correctly the M18A injectors were yellow, not sure if colour is significant on these injectors or not though.

IAC valve on these get stuck if the TB has been shelved for even a short while. If you didn't check it before installing the Liana TB I'd suggest you start with checking that it can move freely

Next time I have the motivation to pull my gearbox I'll be swapping to Liana flywheel and clutch. Below are some comparison shots.
Freshly machined flywheel is Liana, Old and rusty is Jimny flywheel. I'm hoping to make it smoother at highway speed and maybe also achieve a bit better highway economy. Of course I'll be sacrificing some 1.8 perkiness but I think I can live with that.

Liana is about 3mm thicker than Jimny
Image

Threaded holes and positioning pins are further from the centre on the Liana flywheel, this is why the flywheel has been swapped when doing the engine swap
Image

The friction surface is raised on the Liana flywheel and recessed on the Jimny flywheel
Image

Teeth are a perfect match so Jimny starter should still work

Didn't end up moving forward with it so it wasn't really helping anyone anymore.... Mates conversion is all sorted now. This thread is by far the best out there.
