G'day.. the bearing on the transfer case output shaft of my 89 Vitara is shot.. Just wondering if anybody has gone down this path.. is it best to repair? Any idea on cost?.. or maybe I'm better off looking for second hand transfer case? And cost?.. I have very basic mechanical knowledge and a very basic toolkit, looked at the repair manual and I'm thinking it's probably out of my league to repair myself but I could probably swap it out... any thoughts appreciated.. ps hope this is in the right section.
From my experience replacing parts in gearbox i.e.bearings etc can be tricky if you don't have the right tools but saying that it's definitely not impossible. Bearing kits can be found all over or you could probably source just the ones you want to change at a good bearing supplier. Much easier to go for the replace the whole box but second hand gear ya just don't really know what your getting. My moto is" have a crack" Ya need a plan and If ya have no joy go to plan b. Good luck
