Just did the 13->1.5 vvt swap on my Jimny. Was fairly straightforward, just had to swap almost everything from one motor to the other. Ended up taking me and a couple mates ~14-16 hours total at a leisurely pace with two cartons of jacks.

Hi all

Has anyone here fitted an aftermarket ECU on their VVT Jimny transplants yet? piggyback or standalone? I'm off to have a look at an M18A for my Jimny this week, if I go ahead with it I'll be fairly keen to fit an ecu and get it properly tuned, just want as much info as I can get before I fork out for the bits.

There is surprisingly little info to be found via google library regarding ecu upgrades for the VVT Jimny. I've had a look at the Haltech software and there's no base maps in the standard library for an M18A. There is trigger settings for the M16A but it doesn't say if it's VVT or not.

I've contacted a Haltech dealer in Vic requesting a recommendation but am yet to hear back.

Thanks

Hey all,

Ive read this post multiple times now, im looking at dropping a M15A in soon, its out of a 2005 cruze, non vvt conversion.

I get that i use M13A exhaust, starter, power steering, air con, all pullys, alternator, fly wheel, clutch, fuel rail ect.
M15A injectors
Looks like change rocker cover, or drill out an move dipstick to.

Only thing im unsure about....
What about the intake manifold an throttle body, M15 or M13?

I am a firm believer that you MUST fit a piggy back system at the least to do fueling and timing.

M15 manifold from the swift wont fit in a jimny. the swift tb is the same size. Probably very similar outcomes for the cruze.

Manifold isnt off a swift, its out of a cruze, manifolds look identical, has all the vacumes...... only difference i can see is jimny one has #21 on it, cruze has #25

Did a M15 hi-comp swap a couple weeks ago, running pretty sweet but really feeling like its restricted.

The TB is the same size so need at least an M16 TB... Anyone have a spare laying around???

Exhaust could probably do with some extractors and a decent free flowing 2" or there abouts.

But anyways, couldn't of started this without the thread, a case of beer and a mate with a zook.

Maybe I should start a build thread...

Back to an old topic - injectors. The liana yellow injectors I believe are 254cc or there abouts, their denso part number is 195500-4630. Masda mx5 2001 to 2005 1.8L have a purple injector that has the same moulding and plug fitting and seals etc denso part number 195500-4060 they are 265cc. Would this solve the leaning out problem at top end power? (Of course would be richer down low)

Motors here, extractors, heavy duty clutch been here 6 months still sitting in box, gaskets an all other bits are here, tearing M13A out tomorrow. Last thing to do is get flywheel ground. Then put it all back together.

One thing im having trouble with is finding the fuel pump relay, its a 2003 model jimny, any one know location?

I think I mentioned it in the private message, that the m16 cams have bigger lift and duration than the m13.

1.5mm on intake and 1mm on exhaust. The exhaust cam is a direct drop in. The intake needs a bit of fine tuning...

On the end of the m16 intake cam is another tooth gear for the cam angel sensor pickup. This needs to be swapped from the m13 cam... Then when doing timing, the cam has to be retarded by 1 tooth on the timing marks to work...

My final dyno figures are 85kw and 145nm at flywheel.

I have not done the same work on the cams as Rivar. I am running the standard M13A cams and intake with M13A

injectors, I have installed a complete exhaust with ceramic coated headers, and euro 4 cat.

On the dyno I have achieved 82.5kW and 149nm at the flywheel.

Old mate at Newcastle dyno centre was not worried in the slightest about the fuel delivery at higher revs.

So im running M15A 2005,
M15A manifold an injectors.....new extractors, lightened flywheel, heavy duty clutch, bigger leads, new plugs, fresh oil, had a new water pump here as well, new manifold gasket an exhaust an rocker, ended up swapping rockers an dipstick, also got rebuild kits for the fuel injectors.
Idles perfect, no engine light, no overheating. done about 300 ks allready, also towed 3x 2 tonne loads of wood. Goes wicked now, hills that use to be 2nd are now 3rd gear, 3rds are 4th, an 4ths are 5th.
Just want to thank everyone who put together this guide.

M18a Jimny loses power once it gets to 2900rpm, (worse going up hill under load) 2006 pre abs auto any ideas? Have replaced ecu, map sensor, has m13a idle controller on m18a iacv and m18a throttle body, and has m18a injectors have swapped coils new leads and plugs etc engine light is on has a pending code 01, idles fine and seem to be able to rev it fine in park. Did reset ecu not much difference and engine light stayed on. Any ideas appreciated

Starving? Fuel system perhaps?

Did it ever work properly after the conversion - in other words - are you looking for help diagnosing what is probably a conversion related issue, or, are we looking at a running issue that has developed sometime post conversion?

My suspicion would be fuel delivery - have you checked the fuel pressure, when last was the filter replaced?

Its a conversion issue I think. I'll check the filter. I've since replaced the cmp sensor and will do the ckp sensor today, (i have 2 or three of each of them so won't cost me anything), then I'll check vacuum hoses, (the large hose from the intake pipe to the valve cover isn't the best). I redid the idle rev check and it actually only revs to 4000rpm or so at idle and then pulls back so doesn't give its utmost there either, would this indicate a significant vacuum leak. I also have a new aftermarket fuel pump in a box I had from another project never used it. It will fit, is it a pain in the arse to get the fuel pump out of a Jimny? (most cars have an inspection plate above the tank to allow access to the fuel pump, does the Jimny?)

Standard exedy clutch OK, or best off with a HD right away?

HD will cost me 3x the price of a standard Exedy. (due to me having to order it across the world)
But i will spend the money, if there`s doubts on the standard one.

Motor thats going in is a M16a 2007 Swift Sport 125hp 148nm, most likely remapped to run as good as i can get it to on M13 intake/exhaust.
2005 jimny, trailgear pushbutton transfer gears, 235/75-15`s.

Hey guys!

Im from a Spain and I doing the conversion (M13A non vvt to M16A non vvt)

I have some doubts!

- I need to use the TB from M13A or M16A with M13A/M16A manifold?
- Jimny thermostat etc into back of liana water pump / This is correct?

Thanks!

Anyone that has remapped/tuned (with any form of piggyback, stock ecu tune etc etc) theire M16 swap, that has compared dyno curves before/after the tune?

I`ve installed a 2007 Swift sport M16 125hp in my Jimny, with stock exhaust/manifold, but will install a M18 intake manifold and TB as soon as the mailman deliver it.
Considering a remap of the stock ECU, as a dyno company ive talked to claime that they can do it.

I`m looking for experience and dyno charts from M16 on m13 ecu before and after a retune of fuel and ignition, to see where and what can be improved.
My motor runs fine, cant notice anything wrong. But i believe theres torque and hp to be found in a tune, as i think i atleast lack some torque.
The problem is, it`s really expensive where i live, so i would like to see numbers and curves to finally decide.

Can anyone tell me if the 1.8L Liana clutch and pressure plate will fit in the Jimny gearbox housing? May need Liana flywheel as well, as I believe it is 10mm bigger,. If it will fit, why not.
Planned swap is into 2010 Jimny with 5 speed manual, with 1.8L motor from 2004 Liana.

And anyone found a cheap fuel injector reconditioning shop?
Seems to be a range of sizes (colours) used in the 1.3/1.5L engines. Anyone know the latest colour I should use in a 1.8??

All three ATs gave P0752 error and switched to alarm mode (only 3-rd gear).
One guy disassembled his AT and found friction clutches to be burned. I'm going to disassemble my previous one and rebuild it with some reinforcement (maybe, more friction clutches, and reinfored accumulators).
It's quite cold here now (around minus 10-15 celsius), so usually my temperature on the exit from AT is about 70-80 celsius in 4WD-H, and about 95, when revving, but in common condition on 4-th gear, blocked it's about 75. So it's not a temperature issue, definatelly, more of a torque one, high temperature issue begins when friction clutches begin to slip and burn oil and itselfs, IMO.
I'm running sammy t-case with 4.16 kit and 30.5 winter wheels. My previous AT has been burned on 30" MT onroad use with stock post-2006 AT chained T-case, others used quite same configs, but i'll check.

So this post has been the only thing stopping me doing a 1.8 swap. Did you ever get to the bottom of this? I have even considered the 1.6 swap as it has similar power but a lot less torque. Not sure if it’s the answer

Based on the Jimny auto already being at its torque handling ceiling with the M13, and the very high temps I’ve seen with the Jimny auto behind a g13bb (on a cool night with stock tyres, gearing and a huge cooler) I’d stay away from an M18 with an auto.

The way to do it would be with the AW-4 used behind the m16 in the SWB NGV.

Does anyone have any experience with the later model engines? There are a fair few M16A's from late-model (2011 on) Swift Sports knocking around on Ebay, but I haven't seen any write-ups from anyone regarding fitting them under the bonnet, onto the existing manifolds or wiring them up.

Cheers,
Richard

EDIT:
I'm talking about swapping into a 2007 VVT Jimny
