I've had this problem since buying the car; when going over bumps and uneven road surfaces I can feel and hear a clunking noise (you can also hear the movement/ vibration when idling at 900rpm, seems to be the sweet spot). I've found it's coming from the steering shaft/ column as I'm able to replicate the noise when wiggling the steering shaft up and down. The most play (up and down) seems to be basically at the firewall and it is definitely not the uni joint on the shaft. Also when I push up on the steering wheel when going over bumps it doesn't make any noise.
No it's definitely the steering column/ shaft. There's no play in any other components. Do you know where the bush is located (closer to firewall or steering wheel)?
