1stly, want to clarify that slightly bigger (215/75/15) tyres will improve top end for highway driving, and effect low end take off speed marginally???

2ndly, I was phyced for tougher, taller tyres, and had settled for either 215/75/15 Kumho KL71 MT, or Maxxis Bighorns, yet they are both unavailable at the moment. I'm not sure if other muddies in the maxxis range are available, however the dealer did say they could do Bravo 753 MT each for $190 (halfway between AT/MT).

I was also interested in the Bravo 771 AT, at $119 each, but they are only available in stock size 205/70/15. The 771 is the easy way out, cheap, wont throw out gear ratio's, and a decent upgrade... The 753 gets decent reviews, but seems to be halfway between MT and AT.

Ultimately still deciding on size & how aggressive a tread pattern... Is bigger better for the tiny 1.3 Jimny? Are muddies a good choice for the heck of it, and occasional play in the mud...?

The Jimny shimny deathwobbles are behaving well since I put new EFS 2" suspension lift in, plus tough dog steering stabalizer (2000 model Jimny, shocks were badly worn). Dont want to bring that back, but from what I read most people are happy with their bigger tyres, and a fair few people run 235/75/15 and dont seem to complain too much... (except for gear ratio's & burnt out clutches)

Don't want to pay more than approx $200 a tyre... Any other suggestions... (yes i've read other threads, but guess im looking for alternatives that are similar to KL71 and Big Horns)

I'm loving my new BFG'S but yet to run them off road. Makes a bit of a difference to highway RPM and low speed take off but honestly not enough that I notice it anymore after a week.
If you buy them locally you're up for around $300 each which is outside your budget, plus you're probably looking at around 12 weeks according to my local shops - or you can get a set of 5 from tirerack.com for about $1000 delivered to your door in a week ;)

Haha, funny I guess, I would pay for them if I knew they were going to be a mega upgrade, i guess I had my budget set out but the choices were not available, so now im just trying to find something i actually like. And when u say it makes a difference to highway RPM, is the difference lower reving, improved top end... or is the motor working harder???

Hankook Dynapro RT03's, a great tyre, i would buy them again.

a taller tyre will drop your revs, at 110kmph my jim would sit at about 4100RPM but with 215;s that dropped to about 3900RPM.

you will also notice it takes a little more revs to take off, but you will get used to it in about a day, and then forget what it used to be like.

What sort terrain will you mainly be driving?

i catch the train to work, or ride a push bike, so mostly used for w/end play, do a fair bit of highway k's driving to blue mtns or south coast, usual 4wding for me is actually on random fire trails and state forests for recreation (rock climbing, as in with a rope), but fairly regularily. I have a mate with a jeep who likes to play rough and get muddy etc, and am keen to play a bit harder every now and then...

def go for the 215s.... if u got the lift go for it!... the car would look better 8) and also it would give u 1" more of clearance

and for day to day driving... I barely notice any difference.... every now and then I do notice a tinny bit for take off in small hills, but pfff in reality is nothing

so dnt worries bout then :helloo:

and well for tyre well its up to u wht u like more... I cant talk to u bout tyres experiecne as I only use my HT and now I got some Federal ATs (reaaaaaally cheap) and with an agresive tread for an AT (still waiting to try them in mud :twisted: )

Cool, I thought this would be the case, I just had a few recent probs with the motor, just back from a week at the mechanics fixing a crank case oil leak and the crank gear was dying and throwing the timing out, so was losing faith in the beast, but she's running sweet again now... :wink:

Hankook Dynapro RT03's look the goods, will have to investigate price. Was going to get new tyres ASAP, but seeing as I just passed rego, will prob take my time till I find something I can't resist... but leaning towards a taller, tougher tyre for sure... :twisted:

Keen to find out if/when the KL71 will be availalbe, and the Big Horns. Im also going to get a few quotes from tirerack.com.

Bighorns are no good for offroad if you ask me, i have had a set and where i am they get cuts very easily and often the lugs get damaged. I now have a set of the kuhmos and they are great. No cuts, even with wheel spin. They are a bit noisier than the bighorns and they are direct rotation but i would say that kuhmo is definatly the winner

Went for the taller muddies!!

So far am happy with the look, on road handling taking a bit of getting used to around corners, but nice smooth ride and great over bumps.

Acceleration definantly suffering, but I just cruise now instead of trying to boot it (also needs another service as radiator playing up, so not pushing the girl).

Great on the freeway, revs alot lower at top speed.

Great upgrade for longer trips, prob not as good for stop start city driving, which I try to avoid anyway.

I'm running 215/75/15 KM2s on mine, and I'll buy them again for sure, they have awesome grip in the vic mud, and gravel/rock tracks, and the road noise is a lot lower than i expected. Buy them if you can afford them!


PS. is your jimny the one in the jimny lift ebay ad?

Just thought I would give an update on my 4b.

She was off the road for 12 months with a rebuilt (don't ask). Had crankshaft warping issues I can only put down to mis diagnosis by mechanic by letting it get to this stage. Well.I switched back to my old faithful workshop.and she has been running sweet for the past couple of years.

Rebuild set me back about $3.5k but the average cost to buy and keep the car on the road has been low over the past 8 or so years.

Anyway the BFG muddied havnt missed a beat. Such a capable setup, and lots of fun on the dirt.

Only other mods have been to remove rear seats, fit a custom draw, plus racks.
