A 1hz would be a much better option. The only reason I know I have my boat behind my LC is it takes a bit longer to stop

I have seen two different 2.8 hiluxs die in different puddles. The first one because his motor sucked in a thimble of water, the other because his stater and alternator ended up full of rubbish and it wouldn't turn on again, dash lights going nuts etc. Neither one drove home because of their ignition system and I think it would be fair to say that in both puddles a zooks ignition system would not be getting wet. So really is having a dizzy and coil that big a deal?

Not for what we do so much. I've never thought "Damn, wish I had a diesel so I could drive that."
But for tourers who do remote trips with plenty of actual flowing river crossings it would be beneficial to have less electrical weaknesses.

if you want good fuel economy and not alot of go, buy a 1ltr!! hahaha
id go with the 1.6 or 1.9 diesel if you do something as said above the d4d is heavy, plus gearbox and transfer lengths will make some awesome drive shaft lenghs

I've had water over the bonnet in my Sierra (1l soft top) several times, only once have I had an issue. I timed a river crossing badly and hit the wave coming back from the Patrol that had just crossed when I hit the deepest part of the river, water poured through my air vents, the dash and even came through my stereo (which still works!! $39 repco head unit FTW!). I made to to the bank on the other side before it stalled out, after turning over for about 10 seconds it fired up again and picked up all cylinders in the next 50m or so of driving.
I didn't prepare the ignition system in any way for that crossing (or in fact, any crossing I've ever done and everything pretty much goes underwater here in winter), no water dispersant spray, I haven't sealed it in any way, the dizzy pressurization system isn't hooked up (probably a good thing, woulda filled it with water) I have a mechanical radiator fan and the belt was left on. I don't even have a snorkel. As you can see this is pretty much the least favorable set up you can have, yet I drove as deep as you really can in a Sierra.
IMO, you'l start floating before you have ignition system issues.
