I already have the chassis brackets for the GV. I just need to get the donor car from my mate for a few days. Its a LWB though, so anyone wanting shorty sliders will need to provide me with a donor car for 2 days. Also it would be better for me if there were 3 or 4 people wanting them, as its easier to justify the time and expense of making a Jig.

Ive been after XL-7 ones for a long time, people say the GV ones dont fit, i just think they will be slightly shorter?
EG GV sliders are 1800mm long i dont know if that is from end of door to door or wheel arch to wheel arch.
On the XL the doors 1800 at bottom and wheel arch's are 1990mm. Its possible the center Tail shaft support bearing cross member may be a issue with mounting depending on where the mounts are.
The only ones available is just a 3" tube which my misses refuses me to get as she said might as well have nothing, and i think the price people charge $745 is a bit steep just for 3" tubing.. (she needs a step)
I thought of making my self up some out of 2" galv pipe 6mm thick with a alloy checkerplate on top. Will the pipe be thick or strong enough?
Just thinking, some may think its stupid, but how about the Sliders on some heavy duty hinges prob 10mm high tensile bolts, and heavy duty springs to hold it up, so i could step on the steps to lower them so kids can jump in, then when need they spring back up.

You would need to make a set specifically for the XL7. Like you said, there is a difference in length, and there may be extra obsticles to dodge.
I'd use a 40NB medium pipe for the main slider rail, 40NB legs, back to atleast! 3 chassis mounts per side. Any step or kicker bar could be 32NB medium pipe.

Great thanks.
I was thinking of 4 mounts, want it to be solid, as the long wheel base likes collecting big rocks usually by the rear wheel.
I will have to go back and see if got 40NB, The 50x6mm pipe wasn't that expensive, comes in 6m lengths and they will cut to suit think $5 per cut, just not to sure how heavy it will be.

Ooo, fancy!
Gotta ask - why bolts over the chassis as well as the horizontally split mounts?

Gotta ask - why bolts over the chassis as well as the horizontally split mounts? The large piece is a VERY snug fit on the rail. It gets bashed on with a hammer. The small peice that the slider is mounted to, just sits there. This makes it easier to fit/ remove them. The small bolts on the side hold the 2 together, and the bolts over the chassis rail cramp the bracket against the rail.

If I understand right the theory is that the bolts holding the sliders onto the chassis need to pretty beefy for the sliders to work but also the weakest link to prevent damage to the chassis rail so that the bolts are the first thing to give – or have I got this messed up? I am guessing M12 8.8 would be in the ballpark?

To be honest, there is no science behind my design. Its born of convenience more than anything else. The 2 piece bracket is cheaper to fold ( a single 'U' shape bracket requires special tooling in the press), and its easier to work with, despite the extra bolts up the side of the bracket.
Oh, and the 32NB tube will bend WELL before those bolts give out.

So im thinking about some basic sliders, i dont want them for steps but just for some protection and a place to lift my car with a high lift jack. What are your thoughts on this design? ill probs curve in the ends. Nothing is to a real scale im just tossing around with designs at this stage. Attachment: sliders.png

If your planning on using them to use with hi lift maybe something to retain the hilift in place? I've seen a ute slide whilst be jacked by its tray and it moves dam quick.

Yeh that's a good point! Ill have to think about that cos they need to be flat/smooth enough to slide on rocks as well

Fatzook wrote: What size bolts did you use on these mr fatzook? (the bolts through the body mount outrigger) Thinking of making something similar for my roza as it has very similar outriggers. If you could PM me an estimate for a set the same as those pictured or if you don't have the time to do the whole lot perhaps just the mounts as I reckon I could fab the rest on my own mostly.
