Post subject:  Vitara rear disc brake conversion kit

A mate of mine wanted rear disc brakes for his Vitara, so I have developed a kit.

It is a completely bolt-on conversion.

It uses standard Suzuki front brake rotors, and common brake calipers from a Mitsubishi Galant, which include a handbrake in the caliper and are sized correctly to work without an additional proportioning valve.

The kit connects the stock Suzuki handbrake cable to the caliper with no modifications to the cable required.

The kit contains:

Caliper mounting brackets
Disc mounting adaptors
Replacement caliper handbrake quadrants
Handbrake cable brackets
Brake hose brackets & clips
Handbrake cable mounting hardware
Longer wheel studs
All required mounting bolts
Brake hard lines pre-flared with nuts.
3-way T piece
Instructions

The only parts required are:

Mitsubishi calipers and brake hoses
Suzuki brake discs
Brake fluid.
Silicone sealer / gasket maker

Can be installed with simple hand tools in a few hours.

Price is $350AU + shipping

Oh yeah, my bad, forgot to mention that.

Kit uses the REAR mitsi caliper. Some budget spec 1.8 models have rear drums, but most have rear disc.

Can you go without the disc adaptor and fit em up to later vitaras that have the wheel studs in the axle?

happy for you to send a kit over for me to try

I haven't tried a kit on one of the later axles yet. I think I know where one of those axles is, so I will see if I can get hold of it and check.

with the longer wheel studs is this gonna make our rear wheels stick out further? if so how much?

what type of suzuki front rotors do we use on the back? sierra? swb vit?

could be very interested.

I would be interested in the kit for the later axle.

Yep, your track width is increased slightly by the thickness of the centre piece of the brake disc - about 7mm per side.

Either will work, but Sierra ones line up slightly better in the caliper, as the Vit disc have 1mm less offset (f*ck knows why).

OK. I got hold of a later axle and did some checking. Unfortunately the newer axle has a different offset from the housing end to the wheel mating surface, so does not work with the current brackets. Also the seal housing can't be moved far enough away from the bearing to get the caliper bracket in place.
Could get round this by using a thin wheel spacer (about 6-8mm), longer studs, and a bit of grinding of the seal housing. This would require removing the wheel bearings to modify the seal housing though.

The better option is probably going to be me making another caliper mounting bracket with a bend in it to get the right offset, and slightly thinner to fit between the seal housing and the bearing. Then it would all bolt together easy peasy.

How many people have the later style axle and would be interested in this?

I think changeover is 96, so yours probably has the newer axle.

Easy way to check is to have a look in the centre of the wheel. If there are 4 nuts holding the drum on to the axle, then you have an early axle.

If there are no nuts in the centre of the wheel other than the wheel nuts, and the wheel studs are attached to the axle then you have the later style.

You will need to take the centre cap off to check this if you still have stock wheels.

mines 10/95 with later axles, if you have the later dash chances are you have the later diff

BenT, it would probably pay to check the later again 2lt and GV's as well to see if they would all share a common bracket before you tool up for it, GV's would probably be your biggest market

With the model Mitsu Galant. Do you have pictures of the model?

Australia did not get many Galants. And most of them are jap/nz imported. Nz got alot more variations.

valid point royce, i know the drums are a quite bit larger on my 2.0l vitara (SV420) compared to the 1.6l (SE416) i would assume the drums on the GV's are size similar to what i'm running.

Yeah, good call. I will see if I can track down a GV diff to see how they compare.

Yeah, we do have a lot over here. Some Jap imports, some assembled here, back when we had an automotive industry.

Here's a pic of the model. 89-93ish. E33 Galant.

Have the later vit sv620 imagine it should be the same as atari. Keen for a kit when you get them sorted

Yeah those basic Galants are rare over here. I think i have only seen the Import turbo 4wd ones.

We had the Australian Made Magna, so i don't think Mitsubishi Australia wanted 2 large cars on the same market here.

The Galants probably drove a hell of alot better though

Alot of brake calipers are probably very generic. So there may be another mitsu out there that is similar in aus with the same calipers. Maybe similar shape rounder magna's 91'+?

Anywho, The kit looks good Ben.T.

If i had a vit. I'd buy that kit!

(You dont do them for bundera/lux rear diffs do you?)
