| Post subject: | Bed base to fit Jimny |
A while back I made a rather cumbersome bed base that folded up and fit in my Jimny. It was for overnight camping so I could just sleep in the car. My wife and I could sleep fully stretched out although I had to have the passenger side so my feet didn't touch the steering wheel. I've decided to make a more professional version with a slide out extension. I love my MIG (have I mentioned that somewhere already??) Stretched out in the original version
The new version

sounds like an awesome idea that I've always thought about. But where do your front seats go? |

I've actually slept in my car on the seats. Not very comfy though dm90 wrote: i just prefer my swag on the ground, that way i can keep all my stuff safe inside my car.
good work on the design and welding though. Yeah but this is easier (once it's finished) and I get a double bed. All the gear will go underneath. I ran out of steel but am yet to fit legs and rails which will elevate it 100mm above my false floor. Cheers re; design etc. |

Very good idea. Ive been trying to think of something similar. But decided on the swags too. Zoomed out photos....from outside the vehicular device? |

Zoomed out photos....from outside the vehicular device? Will put more pics up over the weekend as I get more done. I was looking at swags but for $200 - $300 figured I could do much better. Swag; Lay on the ground, get dirty, still can't stop just anywhere In Jimny; Double bed, 6 speaker stereo with remote, lights and electric windows, lockable doors... etc. I'm going to use it when I drive to Sydney in December, plan being I'll just stop at a quiet beach wherever takes my fancy, sleep in comfort, go for a surf in the morning after I fold my bed away, then continue on my way. |

mate, looks good, however i would increase the size of the steel to something like 50 x 50 x 6 mm shs, just to be on the safe side should you be lucky enough to encounter any intimate moments |

I'm not that heavy and neither is the Mrs. When the plywood top and sides are fitted that will give it the extra strength to make sure all goes well. As for amorous activity, I'll usually be camping by myself when I use it. I don't want to over engineer it as I often do. Has to be light. |

how come the middle tube is not the full length, would you have any alignment issues if you were sliding it back in, and the inner tube doesnt slot back in the hole |

Haha yeah, I ran out of that size tube, so did the next best thing. It lines up but there is a bit of binding that I need to address. The bit that sits in the middle was really just to stop the centre leg from vibrating when it's collapsed. But yes If I did it over that tube would carry all the way through |

Getting closer now. Has been a progression of adjustments to the plan, but turning out well. I re-welded the outer legs today so now they slide smoothly. Still have to carpet it and make the inner skin and storage compartment base. Oh yeah, the whole lot will be held in with turnbuckles front and rear. Have found out that the seat in the late model Jimny does not have the bolt holes in the floor that the seats in an early model attach with, so had to change my mounting plans. Base in its' closed position.
Frame extended
Lower part of the base in place

Yeah 31zook said the same. The black jimny only has two small buttons so wasn't a problem previously but silver has the whole centre as a button so will have to make a cover. EDIT: or I could just pull the wire or fuse, or wire in a kill switch |

Paul, does the mattress interfere with storing things such as an esky or fridge? Looks awesome though mate. |

Thanks Cris and thanks for your help on Saturday. A fridge would go in but mattress would need to go on top giving no visibility, but that's normal anyway. Our dog will have to duck her head but she usually lays down in the car. |

No worries Paul, anytime. Yea - visibility isn't usually one of the features you get in a zook when travelling! Lucky your dog isnt the size of Marsh! |
