I grabbed a 5m roll of SMD LED's, waterproof to IP65 with 120 LEDs per meter off ebay, some clear bong tubing & condute saddles from Bunnings, wire, silicone, terminals etc I already had.
Measure twice cut once... Measure & cut LED strip to length & cut a length of tubing a bit longer. The LED's can be cut down in groups of 3.
Tape a piece of wire to the end of the LED strip & start feeding it into the bong tubing. Be gentle when pulling on the strip...
Trim back the silicone to reveal the solder tabs & solder on your wires.
At this stage I test to see if it works... Wrap a few turns of tape around the soldered end to make a bit of a bung to stop the silicone spreading. Now pull the feed wire so the LED strip is poking out the end, un tape it & GENTLY pull the power wire end back so the LED strip is just inside the open end & feed a dob or 2 of silicone in the end to seal it.
With the power end I pumped a bit of silicone in til it fills up.
Let silicone to cure overnight... I then made a set of "caps" out of irrigation poly pipe by sliding it over the bong tubing & filling them up with silicone.
Mount them where ever you can fit them, wire them up using a relay & fuse... and marvel at the extra layer of rice added to you 4wd, now just get some NOS seat covers & some blue valve caps & the Hot4's crew will be envious.

Is that the LED strip you used? - Tim. I'd be more inclined to get the 300 led 5m job they seem to be bigger led's, also that one you put up aint waterproof. |

Maybe, I'd say its more for protection under the car and the fact you cant use the sticky back to stick to a chassis If you buy the waterproof stuff you can use it elsewhere and just stick it without putting it in tube. |

The bong tubing is for an extra layer of protection from mud, rocks & crap not to waterproof the LED's... plus now I'll never have to cut down my garden hose again. I bought the smaller LED's by mistake, I just saw the 120 per meter & went buy now. The larger ones would have been better & mega bright, the small ones would make awesome interior lights, camper lights, lights in rear storage units. Cost = ummm about $80-90 depends on how well stocked the workshop is, LED's were $60, $8 for the tubing, $4 for the condute saddles... the other stuff I had already, wire, solder, tape, silicone, cable ties etc. I've got a few little left overs, I'll wire them up & try to get some photo's.

love the idea of putting them in a tube, i didn't think of that when i did mine doing them off the door is pretty easy going, i put those ones you have on the roll bar of my suzi and wired them plus another strip attached to door itself for door to come on when the door does. under mine i used hard plastic 3 colour strip leds of 30cm long, glued to a plastic u channel,
they also turn white but i havn't got a pic of them white atm
this one you can kinda see the leds on the roll bar how long have you been running your in that tube, cause mine heat up alot and i was wondering how your coped inside that sealed tube?? |
