do they flow well?

Author:  Pubic [ Tue Oct 28, 2008 12:16 am ]
Post subject:  Re: extractors!

the are all mandrel bends, and should flow pretty good, they werent purge welded so have little bits of penetration from the welds.... but its not a race car and should do fine.

i havent started the car yet.... gunna be a while before i do.

Nice one pubic they look sweet. Do they all terminate with the same length at the end of the flange? Well tuned extractors all seem to have similar lengths from exhaust gasket to flange.

Man that oil filter is gonna be a pain to remove. Have you thought about running a remote setup? I'll be facing the same issues in the near future!

man I was expecting more dog kennel :)

wanna borrow my exhaust building books :) they look pretty good but I would tone the collectors down some and make em 4 into 2 into 1

Thats excellent work. Are you going to paint or polish them?

I vote polish :D then you can show off your handiwork

dan, 2,3,4 are all pretty much the same, i was hoping to keep them all the same "tune" length but didnt work out that was with the space i had.

the oil filter is still pretty accessible from the front.

royce, i was hoping to have more of a 4-2-1 setup but it was getting late on the sunday arvo and here we are.

if they are no good and i need something new to do in the future i will make a ore professional set.

thanks joe....i think thats the first compliment you have ever payed me :P

taff, this set will probably be left as is. too hard to get in to polish them now. i want the engineer to see the welds too, hopefully he likes the bird shit look!

mr blue cheers....

luckily they are pretty much just like a handrail..... just a really tight pain in the arse handrail

i had done a setup for a bike a few years ago and picked up a few ideas along the way so the collector section wasnt too hard.

trickiest bit was the second bending section on #1.

i used another bend like the rest of them but cut them into thirds, then rotated each one a little to suit teh "s" bend shape i was after.

Your engineer won't give a toss about the welds on the exhaust, so you may aswell polish it.

Unless it is a structural or load bearing part, I sincerley doubt your engineer will look twice at it.

And just so that you know for future reference, I have 10 & 12mm Mild steel and S/S exhaust flanges for G16 and G13 in stock for $25 and $35 respectively, so you don't need to cut them by hand anymore

Post subject:  Re: extractors!

are you going to acid bath ( hydroclouric) them and then treat them with nitric acid?

Nitric acid attacks iron. By doing this it will remove the iron from the surface leaving the chromiumand nickel as the surface coating. This in turn will extend the life of the pipework. also cleans up the welds too.

This process is called "passivation"

just need 20 % HCL/80 % H2O solution for 6 hours to clean ( use deminralised water only) then a 15% nitric acid/85 %demin water soution for 3 hours. just put in a bucket and use an air bubbler to make the acid circulate. plastic is fine

you can google it to get more info if you want.

Post subject:  Re: extractors!

good idea tzar but i was planning on bring home from my work (stainless metal craft) our cleaning machine that does all that in about 5mins.....

we use the machine from metalscience.com.au

this machine uses a similar acid to that in coke... which is alot safer.

thats a very good explaination for those that done know stainless much though.

Post subject:  Re: extractors!

But acitic acid will not attack the iron

If you have iron on the surface then it can cause spot rusting

but it is only extractors ad not high quality process pipework ( food grade etc etc) and since you have the cleaning machine if they get dirty etc you can just put them back in again.

Post subject:  Re: extractors!

just read about that machine. Looks like it will be taking a lot of work away from chemical passivation... :-(

yeh it won an award on new inventors. it goes ok, there are still some improvements to be made on it.

the consumables are a little expensive too.
