hey guys, ive tried to find information on bull bars and making them legal, i wonna make a new one for my vitara rather than edit the one i have now, as its easiers to make one, i can find plenty of informmation from victoria, but nothing for SA. would it all the the same? so far i know the bar needs to lean towards the car so if you hit someone its not as fatal, and all spotties and winches must keep behind the bar. i thought to ring the cop shop but every one seems to think they wouldnt know, cheers jordan ill be sure to upload photos as i go |

Or are they classed as something else? They are not forward mounted auxillary lights, so they will fall under a different rule. |

I am building one too, I google imaged sierra (samurai) front bars and just copied existing designs. Not that I know about anything. |

^^^^ I’ve read the same doc, note that it says for “manufacturers and retailers”, but my theory is that if you check out what the pros are meant to be doing you should be ok (I am yet to test that theory with a law enforcement officer holding a yellow sticker book though) |

thats the guidelines - they don't assume someone from the general public is gonna make their own =) lol obviously if the vehicle its being fitted to has airbags, the bar needs to be complianced with them, which aint cheap as it involves testing on expensive machines with front cuts of the vehicle. my front bar is custom made and went over the pits just fine, as we followed these guidelines (kinda, the recovery eyes on the front arent strictly legal). |

Laws for south Australia regarding lights are as follows - lights must be as far as possible be fitted in pairs and no higher than the standard headlights from The ground - lights can show only white light, project it's beam of light infront of the vehicle and must be fitted so that the light does not reflect off the vehicle and into the drivers eyes. The laws regarding roof mounted lights and distance between lights only apply to other states SA has it pretty easy |

So can a cop pull you over just for having a custom bar? Like does it need to be engineered or is it if it just complies to the above rules? |

cops can pull you over for what ever they like. if it complies to the ADR's then you'll be fine & it doesn't need to be engineered, but it doesn't mean he wont defect you for something else. |

That's from WA's Transport Department.... might be different in other states, but it'd be a good start. You can read the ADR's online, but theyre VERY long! |

Regards to adrs it also states that the bar must be crash test approved, therefore leaving a clause for authority's because face it, not one bullbar on the market has been crash tested, the original one they've copied has been though, my mate owns uneek 4x4 and the trouble they go through to build a new bar is amazing and not to mention cost an arm an a leg! At the end of the day you take a risk with any mod it's up to you personally if you don't mind hassled once or twice go for it, I have a new jeep wrangler with roof lights, and LEDs mounted to A pillar, running a stubby bar with a forward facing hoop drove the whole east coast of aus and lived in Sydney for 3 years not once did I receive a canary sticker maybe I was just lucky |

I had no idea there were any rules around this lol I didn't even consider it, I've been running a custom home made bar for about one and a half years and never been pulled up. I took the ends off a standard bar, cut the tubework off and ust made a winch cradle in the middle so it looks pretty stock. |

Most laws are being revised to read symmetrical now to accomodate for lightbars etc. |

I was told around 14 months ago [at a W.A. Transport Department roadblock in the Pilbara] that as a stop-gap measure, until our regs are brought in line to allow single light bars that it is acceptable to run a single centrally mounted light bar. But- the centre of the light bar needs to be blanked out so that from a distance it looks like 2 seperate bars. It sounded very much like petty bureaucracy in action again to me. I wouldnt take the "boys in blue" [W.A. Police] interpretation of the rule book as gospel, instead It would be better to contact the "boys in khaki" [W.A. Transport department] as they are the ones who write the rules / run the pits. Recently, W.A. Transport had W.A. State legislation ammended for Pilot vehicles escorting oversize loaded trucks, so they can run LED lighting instead of old school globes. They are receptive to new tech- it just takes a bit of time for them to wade through the red tape. stephen |

Ryanh wrote: - lights can show only white light, Last time I read the ADR's, vehicle head light / driving lights are only permitted to be "white" light- so technically the blue tinged headlights used by many these days [that tend to melt my eyeballs] are illegal. stephen |

HID lights / conversions are illegal unless the car is originally manufactured with HID lights. |
