What stops the axle from swinging sideways?

Independant suspension on a trailer is not new, but they always have 2 points of contact with the chassis. Same as any A-arm or wishbone found on any other type of independant suspension.

EDIT: It COULD work if you used a large enough member for the single swing arm..... like 200x50 with a 200mm 'hinge' at the chassis, but that will be quite weighty.

X2

Have a look at the suspension design used by track for their campers. Very elegant, and has some quite advanced wheel path design to prevent trailer sway. They moved away from a simple swing arm many years ago.

Might be a good idea to chat to Ball,
He has the privelige of repairing caravan and trailer suspension and stuff after they cark it due to NT tracks and roads.

Ball should have a few pointers on what works and survives in the real world.

I hate all those RHS swing arm designs- they just look so agricultural.

Google "track mc2 suspension"

The engineer at track trailer is a land rover guy and based the mc2 suspension on range rover parts- spring, shock and radius arm, and bushes. It could be very easily replicated with cheap wrecker parts from an old range rover and will outperform a swing arm design by a whole lot and be no harder to build.

The Tvan is my favourite trailer.
