I needed a front bar for the Rallyzook, so scrounged through the junk pile and had enough stuff for a tube bar. I was going to make a box section bar but thought this might be lighter.

Brackets...

I bent some 50mm gal pipe with my crapper bender...
Image

I used some 35mm pipe for the lower section...
Image

Welded some plate to the ends both pipes to make them look neat, and strength...
Image

put a strip of plate running down the bracket, for looks i guess..
Image

put some plate along the top tube as a bracket for the spot lights...
Image

finished and painted, with the spotlights...

hah, no friends so nothing else to do

took 6 hours start to finish, probably slow compared to people that know what they are doing. I'm pretty happy with it.

I'm still thinking about how to work some indicators in there. The ones i have might be a bit big so might look around for something slimmer/smaller.

you should bolt it on better and use crush tubes through the ends of the chasis

how thick are those brackets?

Author:  steve [ Sun May 31, 2009 12:18 am ]
Post subject:  Re: Basic Sierra Tube Bar

5mm, not thick enough? I thought about making some extra brackets for support, and still might, but at the moment i'm thinking if i hit something it's all going to be wrecked anyway, so what's the difference? Or maybe low impact hits could be ok with stronger brackets?

nah when you think about it the stronger the bullbar mounts are the more force the chassis has to absorb. I say let the bullbar have some give that way you may potentially save your chassis. Low impact hits probably would be ok but its rally, nothing is low impact or soft. It is go hard or go home

too late zookfan, you've got me worried now... i know what you mean and that's what i was thinking too, i thought if the bar is too strong then it'll probably bend the chassis, because the chassis is only thin, but te chassis end is pretty well supported on the end, where as the bar brackets are long and thin, which if you hit something the bar might just bend sideways as the brackets fold sideways... hrm.. who knows... maybe another beer will help :?

Post subject:  Re: Basic Sierra Tube Bar

hehehe i can make anyone worried.... When you add the crush tubes to the chassis, add another bracket on the other side of the chassis and weld a piece of tube or box in between the two brackets. That will help stop a lot of side to side movement. OR a 6 pack and you will never think twice, until you run into the tree.

Steve are you planning on running into things...... if not it looks fine to me, it's really just a place to mount your spotlights. Mate in a lot of events you are required to have indicators and hazard lights front and back and even a high mount dust light and high mount brake light

fatzook uses strip type indicators on his bars, might be worth asking what he wants for a set?
