Hi All,

Keeping with Zook tradition I have found a reasonable alternative(CHEAP) for a diff breather kit. It's all pretty and blue!! I know i'm probably takin the piss a bit, but it's cheap.

What I purchased & What it cost:-

*True Blue Garden Hose 15m x 12mm $19.99
*8 x Hose Clamp $1.42 each $ 11.36
*Black poly T Piece $0.91
*Black poly X Piece $2.18
*Mini Air Breather $14.99

TOTAL $ 49.43

The thought process is to have the rear diff, t'fer & box meet at the X piece and have one single hose run up the front were it will meet the front diff via the T piece. Then out of the T piece to the Mini Air Breather mounted nice and high on the fire wall.

I think it should turn out ok. What do you guys think?

I would like to thank the very kind people at Bunnings Warehouse & Super Cheap Auto, I don't know what I would do without them!!

you have to drill and tap the gearbox to put a breather on it

Post subject:  Re: Diff breather Kit

its cheaper if you buy the the air tubing like in ths kit http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Diff-Breather-Ki ... 286.c0.m14

and just plum it into your airboxs... pad $20 for around 20m.....ts real thin and really neat...

I think the air box is a bad idea, negative pressure?

Post subject:  Re: Diff breather Kit

you shouldn't hook everything up to one breather
have one for each diff then another for the gearbox and transfer

Post subject:  Re: Diff breather Kit

negatve pressure?? do explain....the breather in a diff/gearbox/transfer is to allow for expansion...

No you don't.. Just remove the hat piece and then jam a hose over the top.. Works great and saves any drill swarf getting into the box. 1/2"(id) air hose or garden hose fits over the socket nicely.
BTW... 4 breathers are better than one and I'm sure Supercrap $2 fuel filters are cheaper than the one pictured above.

DO NOT PUT ANY BREATHER INTO AN ENGINE INTAKE AIRBOX!!!

The vacuum WILL create a low pressure in the diffs/gearbox/transfer and when going through water, they will suck water in past the seals.

99% of all externally facing seals only seal one way....

Thanks for the replys fellas. It was going to work well in theory. I'll go with 3 breathers now. 1 for box and t'fer and 1 on each of the diffs. Where is a good place to mount the rear diff breather??

Post subject:  Re: Diff breather Kit

mount the rear one in the engine bay with the other 2

Post subject:  Re: Diff breather Kit

agreed with want33s on the gearbox breather.just remove the little round plug/hat bit and the hose slots straight over.

If i may ask a question is it really bad to have them all running to one filter/breather cap??and why?

Imagethats mine which only has the diffs hooked up at the moment with a breather cap that works like standard. Also i believe with the clear hose the hose with the red line around it is oil resistant or is my boss pulling my leg?$13 dollars from local bearing place for the Y piece,Breather cap,2 1/2" hose tails and 4 hose clamps.Bout $25 for hose

Post subject:  Re: Diff breather Kit

The breather hoses don't 'really' need to be oil resistant because under normal operating conditions there is no oil in any of them, only air.

My setup is 1/2" id air hose with plastic joiners in two of them because I remounted the breathers which are $2 supercrap plastic fuel filters.
This setup has worked fine for 2 1/2 years and my car has been rolled LOTS of times.

APPSIE: Your setup looks extremely heavy duty. 8O I would think overkill for a Zook.

Jas.

All done gents..I went down the road that want33s had done. I shared a breather with the t'fer and box - is that ok or a bit dodgy?? You won't believe me if I told you all that I tryed 3 supercheaps and no filters...repco only had 3!...I assume it will do the job...sorry if it looks like a copy of yours want33s...I am hoping the trusty garden hose will hold out..time will tell

Thanks to those who commented...helped me out a lot.

Cheers

Good work .... I'll send the bank details so you can pay royalties...
Just keep an eye on the garden hose... Check it at least every 6 months. You will have to replace it eventually but thats a cheap, easy job.

I thought as much...I still got a spare few meters...I should have got the 30 meter role damn it!!! You should put a copyright on it!!

Post subject:  Re: Diff breather Kit

you can also get TP hose from hose suppliers, looks like clear garden hose with a blue and yellow stripe and it oil resistant

also no reason you cant join them up, not a lot of flow going on there

same with airbox, if you have any kind of vacuum on the intake side of the filter you have bigger problems to worry about

Post subject:  Re: Diff breather Kit

I ran my rear diff breather up into the fuel filler neck cover. It sorta follows the filler hose from the tank.

good job mate, they turned out well in the end and as long as they serve their purpose you've won

jas,it may be a bit of overkill but i was at the shop at the time, was cheap and looked pretty neat.if not i was going to supercheap from there to go the fuel filter path.cheers

i can't find where to attach the breather on the gearbox, can someone please describe where it is or pictures would be even better
thanks!

Post subject:  Re: Diff breather Kit

Its hidden up the top near the back of the box. Its only small, raised bit of tube kinda. Not real very clear directions, I could find it in a few seconds but I suck at trying to explain things. Sorry, hope that helps you.

garden hose dose not last long, it goes hard and kinks and breaks, i had it on my car for about 6weeks, its not good, dose any one do kits for a zook?

Post subject:  Re: Diff breather Kit

Mine is still going well....you must have got cheap garden hose!!! I think there might have been a link at the start somewhere about a kit, it's the type hat needs holes tapped into your diffs though.
