While not necessarily useful for "safety" they are great to have on the highway. I tend to travel at night when there's a fair few freight trucks around, and have never had anyone yet coming the opposite direction who hasn't been happy to update me on road conditions ahead (roos, cops, open petrol stations). Travelling same direction you can ask a road train if they mind you tucking in behind till xxxx roadhouse ... never too far in a Zook in any case
I bought a GME TX3440 and RFI CD900 6.5dB + 3dB combo from Prestigecom ... bundled with GME TX680 3W handheld ... seems to work pretty well.

If your going to remote locations with little to no traffic/help, you'd be best with either a HF radio or sat phone but for safety hiring a sat phone will be the most reliable. You can have the best radio (tait, but im biased lol) with the best antenna and still not be able to talk to anyone if theres no one in the coverage area of your radio. sat phones can be hired for around $140 a week + calls @$2.20 a minute, costly but thats what saftey costs specially with murphys law always ready to bite you in the arse. if your just after a average UHF cb to have a chat with other traffic. most 5w previously mentioned will do all that you want them to. as always it comes down to how much you want to spend. good luck with the drive, take lots of pic's

I'm still leaning toward a handheld having a look around a few places like Jaycar, Autobarn, and a couple of 4x4 shops. The 5W Uniden handheld would be perfect if I could find a car-charging kit for it, and a handheld mic extension.
I'm not gonna stray too far off the beaten track getting over to WA, and although the dash units are more powerful and have better range - convenience and mobility of a hand held wins it for me. Plus, I park in the city streets - I don't want anything to catch a theives eye, so being able to remove it when back in town is a big plus.

get a remote unit and take it out or get a gme with the display on the mic
you wont receive anything useful with a handheld and you sure as shit wont hear anything in a sierra anyway
a cheap one is great walking around 4wding, useless for on road

something like this would be ideal.

i have owned a uniden for a while now and it works fine. where i have it in my
lwb it gets wet when it rains and that hasn't affected it yet.
dunno what the model is but it fits in a wt ashtray really well.

Maybe you guy's should band together to try and sqeeze a better deal out of prestige for doing a Group Buy.
I'm sure they'd shave a few bucks off for ordering at least 5 units.

from what i could work out they are pretty much the same, both 5w DIN mount UHF's, the styling on the GME is a bit nicer but that's about it.
the price difference would get you a very nice antenna!
i ended up with the uniden, but got a good deal with antenna & hand held

Am I looking in the wrong places or what - I can't find any shops with more than two UHF options on the shelf to suss out. I'd like to see more entry level range first hand, rather than relying on ebay

Cheers Buzbox, but looking for an actual shop in Brisbane I can visit. I'll probably buy off Ebay in the end, but I want to physically be able to compare option A with option B, C, etc...

TJM and ARB shops usually stock GME and should be able to answer any of your questions, Some Dick Smith stores have Uniden but usually only have 1 DIN mounted uhf and a few handhelds.
In my opinion the most popular ones are GME 3100 because of the compact size, Uniden UH015sx because of the remote face and scanner function. Both now come as a pack which includes an antenna, And if you need to, All have the ability to run an external speaker. Everything else is just personal preferance, If you want the controls on the mic, I think it's a pain especially you'd constantly accidently bump it, but some people like it. If you want a DIN mounted unit. etc.
What are your choices so far?

Same as mine, he he, sooo how much cheaper did you get it from Big W ?
I liked that this make/model, as it is actually built for 4WD's, its easy to operate, its small in size, and i like the channel changing buttons on the mic, you dont have to lean over and down to do it, and it has a 3 year warranty... i am happy with it... just because some have a big name, GME/Uniden, dont mean its the right one for everybody, and they are usually the most expensive...
Ha ha, you must be an old bastard like me !

I'm looking at the Uniden 012x (?). I saw one at BCF (then half the price on Ebay), and on the packaging it had a 12v socket connection option. Winner winner, chicken dinner - removeability/portability is a must have for me. Hardwiring every time would be a PITA
Can chuck it behind the seat where my 12v power sockets are and just sit the mic on the seat - like you say so not banging around the gearstick all the time
Dunno about antennas yet, a 4.5db and 9db seem like what a decent UHF system needs, but I might go a single ~6db all-rounder, so i've got basics covered.

I installed mine in the door pocket, and soldered on a Cig Lighter plug, so mine is removable and portable, and well away from things to bang around on... all depends on how you install it...

Just installed mine, i picked a up a benelec "Explorer" UHF S/S Elevated Feed Antenna Kit 6dB Epoxy F/Glass Ant & 3dB Flex S/S ant- Spring, 5m RG58 +04104.
So i have the choice of 3db or the 6db, i was listening to some guys working in a quarry a fair distance away.

Sounds like the ZCG UHF Antenna i got from Prestige, 6.6dbi for the highway, and a little 15cm 3dbi for the offroad...

I HAVE FOUND THE GME TX3100 TO BE A GREAT RADIO. AS IT IS DIGITAL VERY SMALL AND QUIET CHEAP.
ALSO WITH ALL THE NEW CHANNELS COMING OUT IT HAS THE PROGRAM FOR IT.
MY VOTE, TX3100

This is the pretty nice setup. What model GME is this? Can I convert to a 12v socket setup?
(if this is your pic let me know, i'll remove if desired)

if your going to fit it into your dash like the pic above, you won't be able to quickly pull it out & the 12v socket would be pointless.
i think that one is a slightly older version of one of these. http://www.prestigecom.net.au/index.php ... ducts_id=2

This is where i put mine in the GV... mind you, if its a sierra i dont think they have door pockets, unless its a 1.3 JLX... but you could do a quick mount on the parcel shelf on the passenger side...
