Good Evening AZ Crew.

:helloo: Welcome to DIY Vitara Power Window Switch Fix

Here is how I went about fixing the dodgy drivers side power window switch in my Vitara. Firstly remove door trim & remove Window Switch. The drivers side switch would not wind down the passenger side window, but it would wind it up.

Parts Required:

Small Flat Blade Jeweller Screw drivers
Paper towel

Time taken with pics: 20mins.

Pop the clips & gently pry it open, there are 3 layers to the switch

and the illuminated drivers rocker swtich

pop off the rocker

lift out the contact springs

Now use a small piece of paper towel & the screw driver to clean the whole lot up, I scratched up the contact areas so they were all fresh metal.

put the springs back in

put the rocker back in

grab you brothers toothbrush & some warm water & clean up all the buttons & platics.

line the tabs up for the central locking rocker

clip it all back together

Go outside & test.

All fixed...

:goodjob: :goodjob:

Most of the power window problems I've seen have been dirty or burned contacts, a quick clean like you did will fix the problem for a year or so, what I've taken to doing is using a very small cupstyle wirebrush in a rotary tool to really polish away the last scrap of carbon from the contacts.

Nice write up ... inspired me to have a second go at mine this weekend. I have similar gremlins in mine :)

Thanks

Now why didn't I think of that... I even have a rotary tool in the garage. I did give the little rocker contact springs a bit of a tweak so they were sitting flat on the contact when depressed.

It came apart surprisingly easy, I had the door trims off to tint the windows so I thought it was a good time to have a look at the switch.

funny you say that, that was a brand new genuine switch 6 years ago. the original one failed in a similar way just after i got it & was replaced under warranty, it was fitted by suzuki & was well over $350 from memory.

what you've done might stretch its life out by another 6 months or so... if ya lucky, those window switches allways fawk up at the worst time. I'd say, can the whole lot and fix it up with something better, like some carling contura rockers 8)

i'll let you know how i get on. the switch is only 6 years old & was literally full of crap, but lucky for me... my alarm over rides the window switches so if a switch does fail with the windows down i just arm my alarm & the windows will still wind up.

have to do this with my central locking switch, can open but not lock the doors when in the car, its stupid as its the most unused switch.

Car use to have a mind of its own when driving it would keep locking the doors, or if unlock it would play games with you and before you can get in will lock itself again.

I know the rear passengers window switch aint working, goes up but not down. Even second had there selling for around $75 and not guaranteed if there working or not. So looks like ill be cleaning mine :)

If you have no luck just get a brand new aftermarket jobby from the switchdoctor on ebay mate. Cheap as chips and they look identical.

my front passenger window stopped working on the new wagon, pulled & cleaned the switch as per above & it still didn't work, cleaned all of them in the master switch on the drivers side & it fixed it.

Thanks Ninja,

I think if do a bit of beach drivng, salt gets in the switch and overtime short out the contacts, think that is exactly what happened to my central locking switch

Someone should make nice thin silicon seals/covers for them.

Just did this again in the new car - windows would go down but not up:

Before:

Bit of contact cleaner and a bit of scratching around with a screwdriver covered in paper towel later:

Whole switch was covered in dust and crap. I don't think my door seals are working all that well any more...

Just opened up my drivers side switch and gave it a tickle up with contact cleaner! Hoorah much success, now I can operate the rear windows from the drivers side.
Mine actually didnt have much dirt in there just the contacts for the rear were dirty.

I was stuck half way to work with a storm on its way and a driver's side window that went all the way down and refused to come back up. Argh!

After pulling it apart, the switch block on my zook is very corroded and unrepairable but this got me to where I could pull apart the whole module and carefully click the switch pins to make the window come back up. So thanks for the instructions and pics.

Now I'm waiting on DHL to ship me my new replacement part from eBay China (where else? :) )
