I had a problem with my fuel gauge reading empty when the tank was full, and the gauge wouldn't start working properly until i had about half a tank of fuel. This is a pretty common thing with Sierras. Chris [nissvit] on this forum said it was easy to fix so i pulled the tank out and took some photos along the way.

1. Remove the tank

2. Remove the fuel leve float thing

3. Bend open the tags and remove the case

There isn't supposed to be a gap here where the pink arrow is pointing to. These surfaces should be in contact.

The usual problem is that these surfaces get a thin film built up over the years which stops the contact of the surfaces. We cleaned these surfaces highlighted by the pink lines.

Stick it all back together and off ya go....simple peaceout

Thanks Steve, gave me the motivation to pull Spooky's tank and fix the sender while waiting for my engine rebuild. The photos were great and made the job so much easier. Undoing that main fuel line is a bitch unless you drop the tank slightly to gain access to it. The problem was the wiper arm was only touching the bottom half of the coil. A little bending here and there and Bob's your uncle, it's working again. :D

Actually now that I've used over half a tank of fuel I can see that it's still pretty inaccurate, but a stack better than it was before! I still had about 8 ohms resistance with the float at 'full' level after cleaning ... I suspect this is a bit high still as I don't get all the way to the top of the gauge when full.

Still ... I'm used to filling off the trip meter :P

I know this is an old one here, and I am grave digin' but I had a thought

Can ya run an earth to the sender (and just the send) for testing, and run the arm up and down manually. Hav soone chck the gauge. iffen it don't read empty when it is empty, maybe bend the float up, so the at=r can drop more?

same goes with reading full too soon. Just bend the arm up a littl and it will show less fuel.

tell me iffen' I am missing something but it should correct for a bad/inaccurate gauge too. as long as the gauge is consistent.

Yeh, you can run an earth to the top of the sender, that's the main problem I had with mine (however I also had it out and cleaned it with contact cleaner) and you can test it while it's out of the tank. I checked the guage while it was down, then cable tied it in the full position and checked again. Works a charm now!

EDIT: You shouldn't need to bend the arm, check that the full range of your float is the full range of your guage and you're set, don't put it back in until you get it working properly :p

Here's one I took when testing the gauge on mine.

You can also test if the gauge is working by grounding the sender wire.
It should read full when earthed.

I just ran a piece of wire from the tank long enough that I could stand at the door and see the gauge when I earthed it on the the door catch (any non painted surface will do).

I also ran a new dedicated earth wire (the blue one) from the tank to the body, just for good measure.
