I have put a brand new Master Cylinder in and do not seem to be able to get the air out of the system - I have put a litre of brake fluid through and still have a very spongy peddle and virtually no brakes.

I have a vacuum bleeder but it just sucks air from around the bleeding nipple thread and very little fluid.

I am also trying the conventional up/down open/close method.

What am I doing wrong?

Did you bleed the master on the bench before fitting? It can be hard to get air out of some masters, bleeding first can help. Are the nipples all clear? No dirt or corrosion in them? Try clamping off all the hoses and them stand on the pedal. If its still spongy there's air in the master, if hard release one hose clamp at a time and test

The whole breaking system is new from MC to wheel cylinders.

No I did not bleed the master on the bench - I will try taking the pipe at the cylinder out an see what that does?

Tony find some old lines that will screw in to the master and cut them so they are just long enough to reach to the reservoir.
Easiest way to bleed a master. :D
Then when all the air is out, reconnect the cars' brake lines and continue bleeding as normal.

try and isolate the problem by clamping off the flexi line to the rear, check pedal feel and see if bleeding improves it. Try this for each front wheel too and see which part of the system is causing the problem.

Is it disk front or drums all around. Drum brakes are shit (even just drum rears) if they're not adjusted right the pedal feel will be rubbish.

I'd be checking/adjusting the drum brakes.

mrw82 - All Drums - All brand New - All adjusted - I am 66 years old and grew up with drum brakes :P Just love em.

I had no doubts on your abilities tony, just mentioned adjustment based on my experience with drum brakes.

Mrw82 - No offence taken and thank you for helping mate.

Jas I did that and it just sucks back the fluid it pumps out - If i get the pedal pressed down and then put my finger on the end of the pipe I can feel it sucking back as if there is a check valve missing or something?

Is the new master cyl the same as your old one, maybe you were sold one for disk brake front. They are visually different, nor sure if mounting bolt pattern is same though.

I find bleeding a master you need to block off the outlets when you let the pushrod out and yes there will be a vacuum, its sucking more fluid into the cylinders which will then force the air out on further pumps

Bleed like normal then if it feels bad and you dont seem to be getting any air out (they should bleed really easy) try the clamps, on my 1 litre I found you needed the shoes adjusted a lot tighter than you would expect to get a good pedal, if the pedal comes good clamped adjust them up some more

You guessed it mrw82 - Wrong MC - It is the one for disk front like the Indian 1lt. The only difference is the outlets on the drum MC has valve's in there to restrict the fluid being sucked back and it waits for the brake shoe springs to push it back - Just a high pressure to low pressure 2 way type valve.

Yeh - Suzi got brakes - It helps when you have the right MC - My compliance plate says the car is an 3/1984 SJ40 and has drum brakes all round - The parts book says in 9/83 they all swapped to disk fronts.

I brought the car in 89 and have owned it ever since.

So - Tub changed because of Roll over? Front axle and master cylinder changed for ????? Shonky dealer changing plates ?????
