I have an 85 Sierra swb and my build car is a 93 lwb ute 85 is 1.3l and 93 is a 1l. I'm putting the 1.3 in the ute but am just wondering if the 2 transfer cases are the same( they look the same from under the cars). Reason for the question is the one in the 85 won't hold L4(either way I will rebuild the case before installation but would prefer to start with one I know has no problems).thanks for any help .

Any comments from the zook knowledge base?........I'll guess they are the same and rebuild the 1l transfer and put it behind the 1.3?

A 1.0 transfer is lower geared than a 1.3 unit (about 11%). 1.0 transfers come with or without a 4wd light switch, if it has a switch it is identical to a 1.3 unit except the flanges (and gearing).

Soooo, if I throw 4.16:1 gear set in the 1l transfer it should be fine behind the 1.3 with 31's(it has the 4wd switch)
Hanging out to drive this thing,

I'd put the gears in the 1.3 case along with a rebuild kit and sell the 1.0 case for a few hundred $.

Also, 4.16's require one of the gears from a 1.3 gear set.

Thanks guys, now to rebuild the 1.3 engine and transfer case. Body and bar work nearly complete. I need mud!

Boy this is confusing, just did a little more research(and some measuring) if I'm right there is a lot more work to putting in the 1.3( I thought it would just drop in......apparently not!) . I'm not to keen on chassis mods so I think I'll look to try and get more power out of the 1l and keep the current running gear, still with a gear reduction.I'm building the MG410WT and using a SJ50 for parts(was going to use the engine) are there any parts in particular I should look at using,ie diffs or such?

It is possible to make bolt in adapters to avoid welding in 1.3 engine mounts. Christover did this- he may still have photos.

Does this mean you would recommend new engine mounts either welded or bolted to pit the 1.3 in as a better option than the 1l. Are there any other mods I will need ie gearbox crossmember. I am still set on the mg410 as the build so if there is a better engine to put in it I'm open to options, it's just that I have a 1.3 on hand.

Golly yes. I wouldn't bother with the 1.0. They are kind of fun, in a perverse way, but the lack of torque is a pain.
Yes, bolt adapters in, or weld in 1.3 mounts. I can't comment on the MG410 gearbox crossmember, but they generally don't need modification. There might need to be some modification of the mounting ears that come forward from the crossmember, but I'm not sure about the specifics of the maruti.

Thanks Steve ,I'll do a cold fit ie no rebuild just drop it in and check required mods, probably by bolting to the gearbox crossmember and see where the engine mounts land. I'm taking pics as the build goes and I'll stick them up once finished....might help others......I'm guessing I should use the diffs from the 1.3 as well.
