i'm looking at an affordable way to lock the 2 back wheels & found the spartan lock on US ebay for under $350 delivered:

it lists the compatibility as being 1984-1998 jimny, but mine is a 1999 built/2000 registered model so guessing it won't fit, but is there any chance it would ? if not, is there any other diff locks about in a similar price range ?

Any 1.3l Sierra rear locker will fit in the rear of your Jimny.

FWIW I'd go for a lockrite over a spartan. Every Spartan I've seen has been very loud and rough and I've talked to many people who have said the same.

Inb4 minispool vs auto locker debate.

looking at the lock rights, they're really well priced but there's a 1510 & a 1530. what's the difference ? also reading other forums people are installing them in the front diff rather than the rear, is that how you guys are tackling them ?

i'm finding whenever i'm going over well used tracks that others have rutted them out with their larger tyres, meaning my front tyre will dip in & cause one of my rear tyres to leave the ground & i'll just sit their cocking my leg as it'd be. really like to fix that as in the patrol i had an lsd & it meant i'd still have the rear wheel on the ground biting.

Sierra front and rear diffs are essentially the same (just different axle splines and 2 pin centre on the WTs), hence Sierra guys putting them in the front as well as the rear.

The 1510 utilizes your original side gears, the 1530 replaces them with couplers. I haven't driven one with the couplers so I can't comment on if they're worth it or not.

Whilst I'm happy with my lockrite, I'd still replace it with an airlocker if I could.

Im happy with lockrights.
I did 75 thou on mine and purchased another my new rear diff.
I have a new spartan in the front to try out.
But auto lockers do kinda suck at times.

As per locking the front of a jimny (or sierra).
I would advise axle and cv upgrades. Following thread springs to mind.

If you cant afford to spend that coin, I would lock the rear first.

I am happy with my rear locked sierra.

I used a spartan, I'd probably try a lock rite.

Adds a silly amount of performance for the cost, sucks on road though. As per Sideways, choice of air locker or auto locker, air locker all the way.

For a bush only rig, auto lockers would be totally 100% unquestionably fine (see what I did there ;) , they'd work well in that sort of rig), but in a daily they have their moments!

flicked those guys an email, they're in adelaide so would be good to support a local-ish product.

out of 10, how bad on road would you guys rate the auto locker for daily driving ?? i've watched some youtube vids of jimny's with & without auto lockers & those without have my exact issues & those with them are just going incredibly well (off road of course). has me really keen to get one.

Depends on how it behaves. If its tight I'd call it 7 out of 10 for horrible ness.

If it works fine and unlocks when you need it to, 2 out of 10 for horrible ness.

4wd systems don't have any units for the jimny so back to lock right it is.

My lockright isnt too bad. Has Auto locker style feel, but its okay.
The spartan i had was crap. Harsh in action, and loud.

My choice for street and bush only, is Auto locked front and selectable rear.
