Hi all.

Sorry for the noob questions. Found a tidy xl7 for a steal but it has a ticking noise from the "alternator" apparently.

im going to see it this arvo, what do i look for?
How do i identify the noise?
Whats the worst case scenario? I.e how much should I budget for repairs?

Thanks in advance

Thats a good idea.

Just trying to work out if the chains are an easy enough job to warrant buying it.
Ive done timing belts in the past but never a chain

It's a pain to do but it's not a hard job. You have to take a lot off the engine to get to the chains if you follow the manual but timing it is pretty easy.

Line the dots up and put it on. Same as a belt. I wouldn't pass on a good car if the rattle is just chains or tensioner related.

I might start with a good service first if it seems like the chains then go from there.

It wont be a daily for a while yet so might have to go have a squizz. Its bloody cheap thats for sure!

You'd really want to check it from a cold start (ie. after sitting over night) - that's when the timing chain noise will be at it's worst. The hydraulic lifters can also make a similar noise.

Aftermarket oil filters can make the rattling worse (the oil filter is down low on the RHS of the engine - as you're facing the engine bay.) I've found Ryco filters really bad for it.

I wouldn't class changing the chains as an easy job; I've done timing belt changes before but would be hesitant to attempt doing the chains/ tensioners.
