Hi everybody,

I have lost my reverse lights, globes are all good, fuses are good. My brother is a mechanic who'll fix it (ive been in the pilbara for 2 months) but he is asking you good folk if the reverse switch for the reverse lights is in the trans or behind the dash? Thanks in advance :)

Think about this for a minute - where do you select reverse gear? Is it in the trans case? Is it in the dash?

If your brother is a mechanic then he should know reverse gear is selected in the gearbox ...

Reverse switch in a manual Vit is in the gearbox, there are two sets of twin wires coming to plugs, one set is emission one set is reverse...

From memory, the black set is reverse and the White, brown is emission.

50/50 chance you'll get it right first go.

I assume that, unlike nearly all of the 'Merican Vits, yours has a manual gearbox. (lazy, effin' Yanks... Wait, that would describe me! )

If it IS an automatic, the switch, most likely, is inside the center console in the area next to the shifter lever itself.

In this situation, the switch is mechanically activated by the movement of the shift lever into the "R" position.

Otherwise, the reverse switch for the manual gearbox is located on top of the gearbox case just forward of the shift tower. it is activated by reverse linkage inside the gearbox.

And I also do not know which switch is which (say that fast five times!) - the emissions switch or the reverse light switch...

I hope that this helps!

The reverse light switch on all automatic Vitaras is on the gearbox where the shift cable enters the gearbox. This is the case for both the th-180 and aw-4 gearboxes. Same as the starter interlock.

The reverse light switch on manuals is as per acker's comment.
