I recently acquired a 1985 Suzuki Sierra that I'd like to have the engine converted to a G16b 16v. Does anyone have any information on how I would go about getting this done legally? Im located in Adelaide and can possibly do majority of the work myself.

Welcome to AZ!

Fill out this form https://www.sa.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0006/16395/MR620-APPLICATION-TO-MODIFY-Motor-Vehicle-2013.pdf and submit it. If approved you can do the engine swap and then get it checked at Regency or Lonsdale. You should get a Certificate of Exemption you keep in the glovebox to be legal.
You may need advice from an engineer that your current brakes are satisfactory for the hp increase. If not you may need a brake upgrade.

Regency may help you with some basic advice on the process or handball you to one of their listed engineers. Be prepared to have some money for the services of an engineer and the Service SA checking fee for a modified vehicle.
